Black smoke poured from the wound instead of blood.
“I tried,” he said, voice breaking into two—man and wolf layered wrong. “I wasn’t fast enough.”
“No,” Haley whispered, reaching for him.
Her hands passed straight through.
The forest shifted. Roots burst up from the ground, coiling around her ankles, her wrists, tightening until she couldn’t move. The silver eyes drew closer, resolving into shapes—wolves twisted and scarred, jaws dripping red.
From between them stepped Veronica.
She wore white, immaculate and mocking, her smile sharp as glass.
