A maid came in carrying a garment like a piece of tacky theater: garish sequins, colors that clashed with my skin, straps that promised exposure and laughter. It was the sort of thing that flashed obscene under a spotlight and had no place outside a stage. “Take it off,” Veronica said, eyes on me with a hound’s patience. “Change into that.
