The old advice about avoiding a thesaurus for fancy words always comes to mind. A specialized writer's lexicon is less about ornate decoration and more about psychological archaeology. When I was drafting a character who was a retired clockmaker, I dug into horology terms. Words like 'escapement', 'pallet fork', 'mainspring'. These weren't just set dressing. Knowing that a 'mainspring' is the coiled power source made me think about what wound him up, what kept him ticking. The vocabulary gave me access to his internal metaphors.

It forced precision in his observations of the world. He wouldn't just see a chaotic crowd; he'd see 'jitter' in the social mechanism, a lack of 'regulation'. His dialogue became sprinkled with these terms not to sound smart, but because that was the literal framework of his mind. The right jargon builds a character's reality tunnel from the inside out, making their voice distinct and their worldview tangible, even if the reader doesn't know every term's definition.

The problem with most vocabulary lists is they feel disconnected from how you actually write. I spent years trying to memorize fancy words from apps, only to have them sound forced when I dropped them into a draft. A shift happened when I started keeping a 'stolen words' document. While reading, if a word stops me—not because I don’t know it, but because its use feels sharp or surprising—I jot down the sentence. Not just the word, the whole phrase. Then I practice writing three new sentences where that word wouldn't normally fit, trying to make it feel natural in a different context.

This method leans on seeing vocabulary as a toolkit for tone, not just ornament. Reading outside your genre is huge for this. A technical manual might have 'exogenous' or 'attenuate,' a noir novel 'crepuscular' or 'laconic.' The goal isn't to sound smarter, but to have more precise tools. A character doesn't just 'walk slowly'; they might 'amble' if relaxed, 'trudge' if weary, 'shamble' if injured. Having those options ready makes description less about searching for a word and more about choosing the right one from a mental shelf you've stocked yourself.

Everyone talks about sensory details, but honestly I've found specific noun-verb combinations work better than adjectives for me. Instead of saying 'the old house,' I'll write 'the porch sagged like a tired spine.' That verb 'sagged' carries the age. I keep a tiny notebook for physical gestures—how someone actually picks up a coffee cup when distracted versus angry. Half of vividness is just picking the right, simple action.

Metaphor gets overhyped. A forced one sticks out worse than a clumsy simile. But when you notice a genuine parallel, like rainwater tracing a windowpane resembling a map of lost rivers, that's the stuff. It's less about decorating prose and more about linking an image to an emotion already humming in the scene. The thesaurus is dangerous; plain words used precisely almost always win.

My rule is to describe only what the viewpoint character would actually notice in that moment. A scared kid won't note the 'cerulean sky'—they'll see the 'too-big sky.' Vividness comes from character bias, not objective detail. I'll sometimes rewrite a whole paragraph from a different sense—sound instead of sight—just to shake loose something fresh.
