“Damien will destroy you.” Carl’s eyes gleamed with dark satisfaction. “Maybe. But he’ll be too late to save you.” In a flash, Carl’s hand shot up, a hidden blade gleaming in the moonlight. Mrs. Lauren’s eyes widened in shock, but it was too late. The blade plunged into her side, the cold steel biting deep into her flesh. “No!” Elena screamed from her hiding place, her voice filled with horror. Mrs. Lauren gasped, her body shuddering as the pain seared through her. But even as her strength began to fade, she refused to back down. With one last surge of power, she pushed Carl away, sending him crashing into a tree.

They start following them. They are busy talking, and Carl is sure they would not notice him. All he needs is one good aim at each of them, and his work will be almost done. Finally, after about five minutes, they sit down under the shade of a tree. Carl signals Jerry to aim the gun. Carl aims at the hybrid, and Jerry aims at the vampire. “At three,” Carl whispers, “one... two... three...” They pull the triggers, and the bullets pelt through the air and hit the two people they were aimed at.

Trees pass by and the ending day of winter is making room for the approaching night.
