His jaw tightened. “You don’t trust my word.”
“Have I ever?”
Another almost-smile. “Fair.” He leaned back in the chair and looked at her with something that might, from a very long distance, have resembled respect. “The dungeons beneath Fernwood use spirit wards. Old ones, older than the council, layered over centuries. They respond to darkness. To corruption.” He paused. “Someone pure enough, with the right anchor, could walk through them without triggering them. The wards don’t recognize purity as a threat.”
