I ask skeptically.
“Wards aren't magic, they’re ancient ritual protections, drawn from the earth and maintained by the pack’s collective energy,” he corrects, sounding strangely like a history professor. “And yes, they are necessary. The world doesn't like things it can’t explain, princess. It especially doesn’t like things it can’t control. You and I, we are one of the most uncontrollable things on this continent right now.”
He keeps talking, filling the jeep with his voice—low, light, annoyingly pleasant, occasionally dropping into that serious, husky rumble that sets my nerves on edge.
