I dropped to my knees when the captain called for a pause, my chest rising fast.
“Water,” Lira said softly, handing me a flask. Her voice always sounded calm, even when her face showed worry.
“Thanks,” I said, drinking deeply. The cool water stung my dry throat.
“You’ve been pushing too hard,” she murmured. “Rest a bit when you can.”
“I can’t,” I said. “Not yet.”
She looked like she wanted to argue but didn’t. Instead, she tucked a stray strand of hair behind my ear and said, “Then don’t forget to breathe.”
