POWERLESS
I don’t know if he’s trying to be kind or just playing the good guy to get in my head, but Drew rolls his eyes and walks out with a groan and a muttered, “suck my dick.”
Now it’s just me and Jake.
He watches me for a beat. Then, like he’s reading from some handbook on fake compassion, he asks, “How are you feeling?”
I don’t answer. Not right away. But I have to be smart now.
“I feel weak. And delirious.”
He nods. Smirks. “That’s good.”
What?
My face must say it all because he laughs—actually laughs—tilts his head back, that ink on his neck stretching. I hate it. I hate how relaxed he is.
