I adjusted the strap of my backpack nervously as the Uber pulled into the curved driveway of my new home—or rather, the home I was about to share with complete strangers. The house was ridiculous. Huge glass windows, sleek gray walls, and a steel-framed door that screamed modern money. Mom had married some tech exec named Harrison while I was away at college. I hadn’t even met him in person—just a blurry FaceTime call with awkward smiles. And now here I was, standing in front of the door of a stranger’s mansion, about to move in with his three sons.

Two days before New Year's Eve, I was finally discharged from the hospital. The moment I got home, a wave of familiar, comforting warmth washed over me. The house had been thoroughly cleaned. The carpet Linda had ruined was gone, replaced with a new one. Every surface had been wiped spotless, and the air carried the faint citrus scent of my favorite diffuser. Busy at work in the kitchen was a very familiar figure. "Clary, you're home!" Patricia came hurrying out with her apron still on and a spatula in hand, her eyes red-rimmed.

I hung up the phone without a second thought. It was a great day for moving. I was not about to let a bunch of nasty people ruin my mood. I focused on making the place feel like home: setting up the bed, cleaning every corner, decorating the living room. By the time I was done arranging everything, the sky had already turned dark. I collapsed onto the big bed in my bedroom. My mind was filled with nothing but dreams of the happy life ahead. A few days later, I came home from work. They were casually snacking on peanuts, chatting, and laughing like they owned the place.

Dad was still in critical condition but he was transferred to another hospital near where we lived as we went back home. Mom and Rebecca were still scared and shaken up by what happened but I was glad we were home. A week after we returned, Rebecca's cake came into my room when I was listening to music and I glanced up to her and she gulped. "Hi". She greeted me nervously. Rebecca has been acting strange around me since we returned and I didn't care one bit about it. "Hi". I said. "Do you want to go get some air?". She asked. "I don't think that would be a good idea". I replied.

I nod my head in response and look straight, feeling the plane taking off slowly from the ground. We were finally leaving this place behind. I took this chance and look out of the window, admiring the beauty of my hometown. “Goodbye,” I say softly, placing my palm on the window and feel a tear roll down my cheeks. Mom grasps my hand and says, “Don’t worry. You will make many friends in New York. Don’t think about what happened anymore okay?” I gave her a sad smile and look away. Never look back at this place again and move on. This will be my new beginning. I repeat this in my head a hundred times before I drift off to sleep wondering what my future will be like...

Robert watched as Kat leaned forward to take in the house from the driver seat, her mouth ajar. “It’s not a new home, but it has good bones and with your touch.” He placed his hand on her shoulder and squeezed with a smile. “It’s not new but, its new to me. It’s beautiful Robert, really” For the first time in about a year she felt her trademark smile grace her face and tears well in her eyes. She placed her hand on his and pressed her check against his cold hand. “Welcome home family.” Robert leaned back. Welcome home.
