Our family assembled in one place for the first time without crisis looming or danger threatening. It was messy...complicated. Jace was coloring a picture that was supposedly our family but which looked more like abstract art. Elena spit up on the blanket in her swing and needed changing. Ethan started fussing and needed to be fed even though it hadn't been two hours yet. Eleanor answered a phone call from her lawyer about the house purchase and had to step out to handle paperwork. Damian's phone kept buzzing with work emails he was trying to ignore. But it was ours. This chaotic, imperfect, damaged but healing family that we'd fought so hard to protect.

"Is she all you care about? Vivian this, Vivian that. What about your family? Do you not care about your family?" Nate looked stunned into confusion by her outburst and when he recovered himself, he spoke softly. "But Vivian is my family too." His mother snorted at that as if she could not believe he had said something so ridiculous. "She's your family? Now you have a new family and you don't care about anyone else?"
