I reminded myself, clutching the blanket tightly, the fabric twisting under my fingers. Cuddles, my cat, meowed softly from the corner of the bed and padded closer, his wide green eyes full of curiosity. He tilted his head at me like he could sense my turmoil. I couldn’t help but smile faintly. “I’m acting weird, aren’t I, Cuddles?” I asked. He meowed again, curling up next to me with a flick of his tail.

“Very slowly. Don’t rush it. Just take your time.” I listen to his advice, nod, and do exactly that. I don’t rush or start blinking rapidly. I just slowly open my eyes wider. Nothing. I blink. Still nothing. Panic rises in my chest. I blink again. That’s when the darkness finally gives way to something blurry and hazy. My chest rises sharply as a shaky breath leaves my lips. As she flickers her eyes, Blackie stared at her. "Blackie, come back," The order is sent, but Blackie doesn't return. Elaina feels a warmth near her. The hot breathing of Blackie is fanning her. Then it walked back toward the window and I took several steps back out of habit. It blinked that golden eye at me. Seeming to wait for something. I walked closer to the glass and lowered my voice. "Blink if you can understand me." The golden eye blinked. My brows pulled together. "You've been blinking a lot though," I said. "So that doesn't count." The wolf stared at me without blinking. I stared back. A beat passed between us. "Can you turn around if you understand me?" I made a slow twirling motion with my finger. "Like this."
