His brain projects the dim room filled with water and his eyes flutter. Meanders to the balcony and slides the glass door open. Cool air dries the sweat on his exposed torso. Hands clutched on the handrail, he breathes hard, heart pounding. His nose flickers when excessive air enters. A glimpse of the emerging morning sun illuminates darkness. He paces into the bathroom, stripps off his shorts and steps into the transparent shower. Water escapes from the wide, squared, lucent LED shower head. He lifts up his head and water splashes over his face.

My heart stutters when I notice an eye blinking and without warning my eyes start picking out human limbs, hidden within the tangled mess of vines. More eyes snap open to stare at me, peering out from the shadows, hollow and unseeing. Silently watching me for a long moment before they fill with hysteria, blinking fast, as if they’re trying to warn me. Limbs rustle the leaves, as white as ghosts, immobilized by the vines.

So, I stayed. Hour four was the hardest. The urge to blink became a form of torture. My eyes felt like they were filled with hot sand. I learned to "micro-blink"—closing one eye while keeping the other fixed on the glass, then switching. It was a rhythmic, exhausting dance. Every time I slipped, even for a second, I would see its fingers curl over the edge of the medicine cabinet, or see its torso lean out of the frame like a man stepping through a window.

I just kept talking, wanting my voice to dominate over the eerie sounds of the winds blowing against the trees. Wiping my face with the back of my hand, a low light shimmered brightly against my eyes, almost blinding me. Shielding my eyes, I moved away a little and tried to blink multiple times to adjust to the bright light it shone with. Blinking I tried to get rid of the tears that soaked my sensitive eyes, and the blurriness that invaded my vision.

Friendships, bonds, companionship, as I said, these things are important to us all. High above Blake's head, a small glass orb of light was flickering. I looked up, feeling the first prickles of dread creeping up my neck. Seeing that my attention had been drawn elsewhere, Blake craned to look upwards too, his gaze finding the tiny light that was blinking on and off. He looked at it, expressionless, only a slight arching of his brow showing a vague interest in the flickering light.

I blink but the reflection doesn’t blink. This makes me frown. I stare in the eyes of my reflection and the green blue colour starts to dissolve into a more vivid and dangerous colour — sapphire blue like the eyes of the men in the portraits. I feel nothing. No shock. No fear. No confusion. It’s all in my head. I tilt my head to my right and witness the reflection mirroring my action but with a smile which is not actually present on my lips. The smile of the reflection widens, making me gulp the non—existent lump in my throat.

"Is that a yes or a no?" He blinked thrice. "Okay, does that mean both yes and no?" She chuckled. He blinked once. "Wow, you're adding a new rule to this game." She smirked. "Okay so yes and no. Do you mean she sounded happy but also sad?" He blinked once. "Hmm." She pondered for a second. "Maybe she was sad that you're hurt but also happy because you're still alive." He blinked four times. "Is that supposed to mean 'maybe'?"

I rolled my eyes tiredly, wondering if he even remembered the blinking rule for affirmation. "Tell me, did you get it wrong the first time? Blink twice if yes," this time, I carefully gave my instructions, and he immediately blinked twice. It felt odd, or maybe he was telling the truth. Perhaps he did mishear the first time. "Okay! Why don't you want me to help you shower and change your clothes?" I leaned over him, my hands behind my back. "Is it because I make you uncomfortable?" I asked, knowing he understood the rule of blinking twice for yes and once for no. He blinked once.

I rub my legs together, I want him, I always do. "You're lying," he remarks and I shake my head. Tears well in my eyes for staring too long without blinking. His voice is a whisper when he says, "Blink." As those words depart his lips, I blink multiple times and push back the tears. Brandon chuckles like he's in on a secret privy to him alone. His hand moves to the nape of my neck, I wipe the tears leaking from the corner of my eyes. "You don't blink when you are lying."
