I stuttered, walking away from my meal. His voice boomed through the phone and I subconsciously wiped the sweats off my forehead. "Where are you? I don't even know where you are, but I promised myself that I was going to find you. That was why I sent that message. Yes, I'm coming to get you very soon. I just need you to let me know where you are."

Careful where you're going. But there's nowhere left to go. I'm already lost.

Success isn’t a destination; it’s a relentless pursuit. Or so I thought before I noticed the platter of rain against the glass. Shit. How had I let it catch me here? I had to head over to her place now. I got in my car in the underground garage, pulled out of parking, and drove down the streets of New York to my destination. The weather worked against me, but I pushed back, knowing I had to make sure everything was okay.

“I will. On our way back. For now… let’s go have fun.” “Heck ya!” I shouted inside my head, throwing my hands up in a wild victory leap. If anyone saw me, I’d probably look like a mime on drugs. “Wait,” I said suddenly, my voice cutting through the silence. “Do we even know where we’re going?”

I need to get moving before they regroup and figure out where I’ve gone. I pull myself back into the shadows of the rooftop and make my way toward the fire escape, my instincts kicking in as I edge closer to the ladder. I can hear the faint rumble of traffic below, a reminder of the world that continues to turn outside this chaotic bubble. I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding as I carefully descend, my heart still pounding, but the rhythm shifts from fear to determination.

“Take me to my room.” I don’t know if I make it there and if I even take a full step on my own. Everything fades too fast.

Now there's only the truth, waiting for me in a motel on Eight Mile Road. I'm ready. I'm not ready. I'm walking toward it anyway.
