Richard Westwood. Powerful, magnetic, dangerous. He is everything she should avoid. At 42, he is nearly twice her age and her fiancé's mentor in the business world. But tonight, none of that matters. Tonight, she just wants to feel alive again. One night of passion changes everything. When morning comes, Evelyn discovers the mysterious stranger who made her forget her name is the one man she should never have touched. Richard Westwood does not do relationships. He does not get messy but something about Evelyn has awakened a hunger he thought long dead. "So then the model trips on the runway, right in front of Vogue's editor, and I swear my life flashed before my eyes," Tonia's voice crackles through my phone.
I try to focus on what she is saying but my mind keeps drifting. The taxi weaves through Los Angeles traffic, and I clutch the gift bag tighter on my lap.
"Evie? Are you even listening to me?"
"Sorry, Tonia. I'm just excited to get home. I’ve missed my man so much."
"Girl, you were only gone for four days."
"Five days. And it felt like forever."
Tonia laughs. "You two are disgustingly cute. Did you get him that watch he wanted?"
I glance at the bag. Inside is a vintage Rolex I found in a San Francisco boutique. Anthony mentioned wanting one exactly like it three months ago. He probably thinks I forgot, but I never forget anything important.
"Yeah.. I got it. He's going to lose his mind when he sees it."
"When are you giving it to him?"
"Right now, actually. We're almost at the apartment."
"Wait, you're surprising him? I thought you said you were coming back tomorrow."
"I am. I mean, I was. I finished the pitch early and caught a flight this morning. Anthony has no idea."
Tonia squeals. "That's so romantic! Okay, call me later and tell me everything."
"I will. Love you."
"Love you too, my right hand babe."
I end the call as the taxi pulls up to our building. The afternoon sun makes the glass tower shine. Anthony and I moved in together eight months ago, right after he proposed. The apartment is gorgeous, way fancier than anywhere I ever thought I would live. Anthony's family has money, old money, the kind that comes with expectations and judgments. His mother still does not think I am good enough for her son. But Anthony says he loves me, that nothing else matters.
I pay the driver and grab my small suitcase and the gift bag. My heels click against the marble lobby floor as I head to the elevator. The doorman, Marcus, waves at me.
"Welcome back, Miss Hart. Mister Blake will be happy to see you."
"Thank you, Marcus."
I press the button for the tenth floor and check my reflection in the mirrored elevator walls. My chestnut hair is a bit messy from the flight, but otherwise I look okay. I smooth down my cream blouse and take a deep breath.
The elevator dings. I step out and walk down the hallway to our apartment. Our home. I still get a little thrill every time I think about that. I slide my key into the lock as quietly as possible and push the door open.
The living room is empty. Anthony's jacket is thrown over the couch. His shoes are by the door. I frown. It's Thursday afternoon and he should be at the office.
Then I hear music coming from the bedroom. Something slow and jazzy. Anthony never listens to music in the middle of the day.
I set down my suitcase and walk toward the bedroom, my heart beating faster. Maybe he is sick. Maybe he came home early because he was not feeling well.
I push the bedroom door open, a smile already forming on my face.
The smile dies immediately.
The world stops .
Anthony is in our bed. He is not alone. There is a woman with him, her long blonde hair spread across the pillow…my pillow. They are tangled together in the white sheets, so lost in each other that they have not noticed me standing here.
The gift bag falls from my hand and hits the floor with a loud thud.
Both heads snap toward the door.
Anthony's face goes completely white. His mouth opens and closes like a fish.
The woman sits up, clutching the sheet to her chest, and I see her face clearly for the first time.
Sylvia.
My cousin Sylvia.
"E..v..e..lyn," Anthony says, his voice strangled. "You're supposed to be in San Francisco."
I cannot speak. I cannot move. I can only stand there staring at the two people who have just destroyed my entire world.
Sylvia does not look guilty. If anything, she looks satisfied. A small smirk plays at the corner of her mouth.
"Well," she says, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "I guess the surprise is on you.”
RICHARDBenjamin walks into my office with a concerned expression."We have a problem.""What kind of problem?""Someone's been accessing your personal files. Financial records, private correspondence. Everything.""Who?""We don't know yet. IT is trying to trace it but whoever it is knows what they're doing."This can't be happening again. We just got past the last crisis."When did this start?""About two weeks ago. Small intrusions at first, then bigger ones. They're looking for something specific.""Like what?""If I had to guess? Dirt. Something they can use against you."I immediately think of the anonymous text Evelyn received months ago. "This is far from over.""I need a full security audit. Change all passwords, review all access logs. Find out who's doing this."Over the next week, IT works around the clock. They trace the intrusions to an IP address in LA but it's a public wifi, untraceable to a specific person."Whoever this is knows how to cover their tracks," the securi
EVELYNI'm in a board meeting when my phone buzzes with an emergency call from Emma's daycare."Miss Hart, Emma has a fever. You need to come pick her up.""I'll be right there."I excuse myself from the meeting and rush to get Emma. She's flushed and crying, clearly miserable."Poor baby," I coo, carrying her to the car.At home, I take her temperature. One hundred and three. I call the pediatrician."Bring her in. We want to check her out."Richard meets us at the doctor's office. Emma has an ear infection, nothing serious but she needs antibiotics and rest."Someone should stay home with her for a few days," the doctor recommends.Richard and I look at each other."I have a huge presentation tomorrow," I say."And I have a board meeting I can't miss."The doctor looks between us. "Figure it out. She needs a parent, not a nanny, right now."In the car, we discuss options."I can reschedule the board meeting," Richard offers."No, you're the chairman. You need to be there. I'll cance
RICHARDThree months after the threatening text, life has returned to normal. Evelyn and I are closer than ever. Emma is thriving. The company is stable under Benjamin's leadership. Then I get a call from Anthony Blake."Mister Westwood, I need to talk to you. It's important.""What is it, Anthony?""Not over the phone. Can we meet?"We meet at a coffee shop. Anthony looks troubled, older than his twenty seven years."Thank you for seeing me.""What's this about?""My father. Before he died, he set things in motion. Plans to destroy you. I just found out about them.""What kind of plans?""He hired someone. I don't know who. But he paid them a lot of money to ruin your life. I found the paperwork going through his estate.""When was this?""About a year ago. Before he went to prison. He knew he was going down so he made contingency plans.""Do you know what this person is supposed to do?""No. The paperwork is vague. But Richard, my father was thorough. If he hired someone, they're st
EVELYNI watch Richard fall apart slowly over the next few weeks. The investigation consumes him. He's barely sleeping, barely eating, just working to clear his name."You need to take care of yourself," I tell him after finding him asleep at his desk at four AM."I'm fine.""You're not fine. Richard, you're going to make yourself sick.""I have to fix this. My company, my reputation, everything I've built is at stake.""I know. But you're no good to anyone if you collapse."He looks at me, exhausted and defeated."What if I can't fix it? What if this ruins everything?""Then we start over. Richard, you've built an empire once. You can do it again.""I'm forty three years old. I don't know if I have another empire in me.""You do. But right now, you need to focus on getting through this investigation."The SEC investigation drags on. Every transaction is examined, every email reviewed. It's invasive and exhausting.Meanwhile, the media has a field day. Every day, there's a new article
