She asks. “Well I also asked him for his blessing to propose to you.” I say. “Really? What did he say?” She asks before I even finish my sentence. “Uhnmm he said no.” I say and she frowns. “He said no?” She asks. “Yes he said no.” I say again. “Why would he say no? I mean he was mad you hadn’t asked the first time and now when you ask him, he says no?” She rants unbelievably.

“Is there something that I can do to convince you?” “Let me go and leave!” “If I leave now, will you do the movie?” “NO!” She shouted in frustration. “Don’t you understand the word NO?” “No.” I smiled. “Because I won’t take no for an answer.” “God you’re annoying!” She hissed. I set her free and moved few steps back just in case she thought of hitting me. “I’ll come back again tomorrow.” She squinted her eyes at me and snorted. “I will never say yes to you.”

She seemed deep in thought after that and then looked at me. She scoffs, “No.” she pushes him away, and swings her legs off the sofa so she’s sitting. Seth keeps staring at her, she sucks her teeth then stands up, getting right in his face. “Which part of no are you having trouble with? Is it the ‘n’ or the ‘o’?” Ash smirks, she was glaring at Seth, who to his credit wasn’t backing down, but he does look confused, “It’s more the fact that you’re saying no at all. Not the word. I’m pretty sure you want me really; you’re only denying yourself.” She shakes her head, pinching the bridge of her nose. Then sighs,

“That is the only reason I called you up here, your only purpose being back here tonight. Say ‘no’ to them. Say it.” “Yes,” she said in a near-whisper. I nodded. “Yes, exactly, all you have to do is say no.” “I meant,” she said more firmly now, her chin rising, “my answer is yes.” Her voice carried through the hall, calm and confident. “I consent. I will do it.” My mouth fell open and hung there. My mind went empty. For a long, unguarded moment, I simply stared like a zombie. I probably did not hear her right. That could not be right.

"Can't you say no when I asked you to?" She chuckled. "Is someone missing me and does not want me to leave?" I scoffed. "I do not care if you leave" "Are you sure about it?". I scoffed but said nothing. "I am, leaving this time," she said walking to the door. "Fine! I do not want you to leave" She chuckled, running to the bed. "You should have just said that from the beginning" "Don't make me change my mind. I can tell you to leave"

With something worse. Clarity. Like she's already run the numbers. Already seen exactly how this ends if she lets me close. And she's decided quietly, completely, without giving me a single word of warning, that she isn't going to let it happen. Not like this. Not on my terms. Not before she's ready. Her chin lifts. Her eyes hold mine. "No," she says. Soft and absolute. One word. No explanation. No cruelty. Just a door closing, deliberate and final, in my face.
