His expression remained calm, but his clenched fists trembled slightly. I raised my head and met everyone’s eyes. "She said she wasn't ready to settle down or start a family and that she still had lots of traveling she wanted to do. She didn't want me traveling with her on shoots,"I replied sullenly.

She can't even look at me. “I am sorry for rejecting you, Ari.” The silence that stretches between us is deafening. Walk away from everything I’ve ever known?” She laughed bitterly. “You have no idea what it’s like.” “You’re right,” he said, and something cold flashed across his face. “I don’t. Because when I don’t want something, I say no.” “Well, good for you,” she said quietly, unable to keep the resentment out of her voice. “Must be nice having that kind of power. I believe you can call it off then.”

"If you said yes." "I know you were," I said. "I wanted you to say no," she said. "But I was ready to do it if you did not." "I know," I said. "That is exactly who you are and I am glad you are that person and I am telling you no anyway." She was quiet for a moment.

She knew. “No.” She blinked. “What?” “I said no. I’m going to Nocturne too.” The lie — or maybe it wasn’t a lie anymore — tore out of me, fast and final. “You’re coming with me.” “No, you’re not.” She fired back, fast, her chin lifting. That rebellion from earlier had set it again, flooding her face. “You’re just saying that because you’re a control freak who can’t stand people having their way unless you permit it.”
