Rainey studied me for a long moment, her eyes searching mine. Then she sighed and gave a small shrug. “Maybe you’re right. Maybe the Goddess won’t pair you with him. But still…” She glanced back toward the fire, where a ripple of voices rose louder, “…sometimes fate doesn’t ask what we want.”
I felt the weight of her words press against me as I turned my gaze to the clearing, my stomach knotting tighter. Because deep down, I wasn’t sure if I was ready to find out what fate had in store for me.
