He held a device that looked like a tarnished silver tuning fork. ​The Whistler. ​Kael watched from the shadows of a giant cedar, his breath shallow. He gripped the hilt of his Hush-Blade. The obsidian edge was silent, but as the Whistler approached the treeline, the blade began to glow with a faint, amber warmth. ​It’s reacting, Kael thought, a cold sweat breaking out on his brow. The blade isn't just stone. It's an Echo. ​"Scout the perimeter," the Whistler commanded. His voice was thin and raspy, amplified by a small, crackling speaker on his chest. "The resonance is strongest near the charred wood. Find the cellar. Find the 'Keys'."

"It's hungry." The city alarm suddenly intensified. The crimson glow deepened. Somewhere in the distance...... a terrible sound echoed through the underground city. A sound like thousands of voices whispering simultaneously. Everyone froze. Because the whispers seemed to come from everywhere. From the buildings. From the streets. From the air itself. Then Elyra heard something impossible. A familiar voice. Her grandmother. "Little star..." Elyra's eyes widened. The whisper disappeared instantly. But she had heard it. Clearly.

“Something’s not right.” Luna’s eyes widened as she noticed it—dark mist coiling along the floor’s edges, gathering toward the exit Rowan had taken. “That’s not mist,” she breathed. “It’s—” A whisper sliced through the air once more. “He was chosen… but not by the Moon.” Luna tensed. “Who are you?! What do you want from us?” The whisper morphed into a low, distant chuckle—like someone laughing from deep inside a cavern. Kai grabbed Luna’s hand. “Ignore it. We press on.”

Ember is immediately terrified and clings to me. “What the hell was that?” “Yokai!” Ember screams. What the fuck is a Yokai? *Ember* I cling to Damian as I get an overwhelming sense that there's a spirit here. And it is not a happy one. I look around and see the Yokai in the river. I can never figure out how people could make plans and decisions about a place they haven’t been too yet. At a distance, Yohan, places his thumb and forefinger between his lips and whistles loudly. He didn’t have to do that since I was already looking at him from my position. I clasp both of my hands together and place them in front of my mouth and blow softly. I start making noises that sounded like it came from a bird. A neat little trick I learned from Yohan just a moment ago. He said we needed something to reach each other without making it too obvious that two people are scheming something. Thus, the whistle and the bird call.

Cherry whispered, quiet now, reverent. “Would you look at that... we’re finally glowing.” I didn’t look like a stranger. Or a maid. Or a girl trying not to take up space. I looked like a storm in silver. Like someone who knew her worth — even if she still forgot sometimes. I smiled. “Ready?” Chloe asked behind me. I let out a breath and nodded. “Let’s give them a show,” I whispered.
