My wolf lunged—no hesitation. The light surged forward like a cleansing storm, and the Curse screamed. The roots snapped as the light tore through them, one by one. The veins exploded in flares of silver as the darkness tried to flee.

And on that note, she swam out of the water. She muttered something to Mel, nodded and wrapped a robe around her body before walking away. “The curse,” Mel began as I got out of the water and sat on the seat opposite hers. She took out a big bag of blood from the blood cooler close to her leg. She’d probably hidden it while she accompanied Marguerite to the pool. She made a hole in the bag with her now outstretched fangs and poured the contents into her mouth slowly. Once she was done, she looked at me solemnly. “It activates every ten years. You have only one month left to make Marguerite yours, or you’d lose her forever.”

She simply adjusted the silver flute, her nose brushing the cold metal as she prepared for the first note. The intervention had given her a name for her curse - a beacon -;and she would use that light to burn every gilded cage Xander had ever built. Evan squeezed harder, making Carmen cough. "Die!" "Do you really want me dead? Don't you want to know where Lyra's head is?" Carmen used the last of her strength to say this. Evan froze for a moment before slowly releasing his grip. After a while, Carmen got up and opened the fridge. There were two glass jars inside with my head and kidney both soaking in formaldehyde.

I turned back to Lucas. He looked like a carved statue from some forgotten temple—too still, too pale, too beautiful and frightening at once. His wolf flickered weakly below his skin, a faint glow, like a lantern running out of oil. I stroked his cheek, letting my fingers follow the familiar line of his jaw. “Lucas, please open your eyes.” He didn’t stir. The healer beside me whispered something under his breath and dipped cloth into a bowl of cold water, wiping Lucas’s temples. “The curse is tethered to a place now. Not to a mark.”

Serenya could only stare, frozen between dread and recognition. The figure opened its mouth—and the voice that emerged wasn’t Maelis’s. It was older. Deeper. “Blood of the first moon,” it said, echoing through every corner of the ruin, “the curse begins again.” The light cut out. Darkness swallowed everything. The silence that followed the light was deafening. Dust hung in the air like fog. Kaelen blinked hard, his vision swimming with afterimages of silver. Somewhere in the darkness, stone cracked and shifted.
