I stood there for a moment, my body frozen, the weight of everything crashing down on me all at once.
I stepped outside into the cool night air, trying to clear my head. Some of the team members were still inside that abandoned building, cleaning up the mess and making sure no evidence was left behind.
As I stood there, my phone buzzed. It was my boss, asking for an update.
“The target is dead,” I said bluntly, my voice flat. “Someone took him out before he could tell us everything.”
“And Layson?” The boss’s voice was grim, knowing how close we were to losing him.
