Satisfied, I finish my shopping and head back home. Martha is all too excited to help me store them away. She even offers preservation tips and meal preps so food can last longer. Her mind kept replaying the image of Todd on the ground, broken and bloody. Martha drove with both hands gripping the wheel, her knuckles white. She didn't speak. Neither did Rory. There was nothing to say. Then Martha's phone rang. The sound cut through the silence like a knife. Martha glanced at the screen. Her face went pale. "Denver." She whispered. She answered. She tapped her phone putting the call on speaker. “Hello Martha." Denver's voice was smooth. Calm. Too calm. "I have some unfortunate news." Martha's jaw tightened. "What kind of news?"

Even the wind stilled. “Rouge is a powerful suppressant,” I said slowly, each word deliberate, cold. “I always thought Father made me take it because he couldn’t stand what I was. Because he hated my Omega nature.” I lifted my eyes to hers. “But that wasn’t it, was it? No. That was never it.” Martha’s hands fell away as if burned. “What are you saying?” she whispered. “Why would you—” “Because I know.” The words scraped out of me like they’d been waiting years to be spoken. “I am not an Omega. I have a wolf, Martha. A sentient wolf.”

He leaned down slightly, his breath hot against my cold face, and delivered his final, crushing sentence in a low whisper. "Who do you think you are? You're not a god, Danny. You're just a dog."
