This is it– the moment of truth! Zane exited from the car first, with a mask of cool indifference on his face as he helped the children out. When he turned to me, offering his hand, I was struck by the intensity in his steely grey eyes. There was a silent pledge there, one that said more than words ever could. We were in this together now, for better or worse.

He walked up to the werewolf lying on the floor, examining his face. "He's a rogue, I smell it," Zane said, unveiling the mask fully. His face was marred by the scars of his rogue transformation. I looked closely and noted the symbols drawn on his face. I recognized it instantly. With a swift motion, Zane drew me close and kissed my forehead, getting up as swift. "You stay safe. The pack must be secured," he said, walking briskly out of the room. "No, I'll come with you," I said, walking behind him with full determination.

I had just finished putting on mascara when Zane came up behind me wrapping his arms around my waist and holding me flush against his chest. He looked like he was searching for the right words. But instead of explaining, his eyes darted to my arm. I was wearing my sleeveless nightie. His eyes landed on the gash on my forearm. It wasn’t too deep, but it was really red. It was from today’s training session, with the knives.

Zane dragged him to a hidden spot, swapped their work clothes and mask, and then walked forward confidently. With the mask on, nobody could tell the person underneath had switched. After Zane walked out, another masked worker called over to him. "Go do a round of the cabins in a bit."
