The servers in the west wing hummed louder than usual — that low, electric growl that never meant anything good. Something was wrong. I could feel it. I’d just finished shutting down my tablet when the alert system blinked again, a faint red light pulsing in the corner of the study. I frowned. I hadn’t triggered any command. “Zane?” I called out. No answer. I waited a moment, then stepped closer. The red light kept blinking, faster now, like a heartbeat on caffeine. I tapped the screen. The interface stuttered, lines of code racing across the monitor before a new window forced itself open.

And far away, in the woods near the villa, a hidden device began to blink. Red. Beeping. Countdown started: 00:10… 00:09… 00:08…

The screen blinked once… then twice… And then…nothing as everything went ompletely blank. The cursor blinked in the corner of a white screen like it was mocking me. I frowned, trying again. The screen didn’t change. “Uh… just a moment,” I said quickly, forcing a nervous smile. I bent over, clicked around, unplugged the drive, plugged it back in and still nothing changed. My pulse spiked and a faint murmur rippled through the room. I could feel every eye on me. “Is there a problem, Mr. Brad Jasper?” one of the lecturers asked, and I could feel a hint of impatience in his voice.

Again, with my thoughts. My fingers tapped on the desk, making a beat that didn’t make sense. Due to the heavy tapping, my pen dropped on the floor, rolling down my desk. I clenched my jaw in defeat and adjusted my chair backward. As I lowered my head under the desk, a red light blinked into my eyes from a device. My heart pounded, unsure of what to see, and I reached for the light. I felt it, it was a tiny device. A bug! “Who the fuck bugged my office?”

It was a red pen and not the blue pen she normally used to take down notes from the conversations she had with people. My stomach burned as I watched her write something down on her small notebook and a hazy dark cloud hovered a moment before my eyes, and left. Mixed images of my parents ran like dust through my mind, dry, thick and fast.

“Heard something about that too.” “The west gate?” Joren shook his head. “If it blinked, no one told us about it.” “Probably just a hiccup,” Tomas said. “Those lines run longer, more prone to flicker.
