To prove the food isn’t drugged, or poisoned, he takes an apple slice and tosses it in his mouth with a mischievous grin.
Then he does something very unexpected and sits beside me on the bed. Close enough for our shoulders to brush against each other. Peering at me with anticipation and another apple slice in his hand, he held it an inch from my mouth in invitation. “Eat, please. The laudanum can cause gastrointestinal distress. Particularly on an empty stomach.”
Clamping my lips together, I glare at him. “I can feed myself, thank you very much.”
“Och lass, never said you couldn’t. But the more you rest, the quicker you’ll gain your strength back. Now, eat for me like a good wee lass.”
