Birthdays. Busy day. But I’m not worried. I’ve already won the only fight that matters.

I ask, knowing that for him to suggest this meant he had something he wanted to do to me. "The loser gets to do what the winner wants for a full day," he said, and I nodded because I liked the idea of what he had said. If I managed to win, there were going to be a lot of things I was going to do and try to make him say. "Okay, deal," I say with determination.

“Would you be here if they did not have sex?” Today, the sun beat down like a man furious on the eatery, baking human bodies along with it. Jason was on day shift and that meant he would be going home soon to see his brothers. Home was one room in their uncle’s house in Daltom where they were allowed to stay for the time and reminded constantly of how useless they were. Once Jason had thought of fighting his uncle and saying ‘fuck off’ to him, but his life savings advised him otherwise. There was no way he was going to survive outside there with three of his brothers without help from anybody. They would have nowhere to stay, that was for sure. Ruby commented when she saw me. "You joke too much." I remarked, eyeing her dress, "Compared to yours, this is nothing." She rolled her eyes laughing. "You look good as always." "Are we going shopping or not? Or would you rather spend the whole day complimenting her?" Sky made a second statement that day, still typing on his phone furiously. "Say something positive in your life for just one day, would you?" Ruby asked. "Steyn's my friend." "I did already, when we first met. Ask her." He replied.

In a frenzy, Alicia blurted, "Win, and it's all yours! Lose, and you still get two-fifths!" I clapped once. "Deal! You've got yourself a bet!"

“Winning. At everything. Which is why I’m proposing a final-day showdown.” Before either of them could respond, Damon launched into his “rules.” “We’ve got one day left here. Every game, every activity — tennis, pool, darts, even who can get their ice cream cone to last the longest — counts as a score. End of the day, whoever’s in the lead gets bragging rights forever. And,” he added, glancing at Sienna, “the loser has to do whatever the winner says.” Jordan’s eyes lit up. “Oh, I’m in. Not because I want bragging rights, but because I know exactly what I’ll make you two do if I win.”

It was a dark and stormy night. The kids stayed home, until the storm was over with. The Following Day.. .. The wheatear was nice and warm, some people return to work, and kids returned to school. Someone decided to go beach to cool down and clear their mind. But what that person fond was terrible, horrible, shocking, nearly fainted from that sight.

She danced around. “We’ll talk later. I’m late. Congrats.” It was really a surprise. We will talk about this later, celebrating. “I’ll be waiting.” I rushed out, my head spinning. As I drove, I wondered if this gift was another red flag. Laura had long dreamed of owning a winery. She was a connoisseur, working at a bank only to fill the gap. Now she had it. Even if he was a fraud, at least she had her dream.

Real sunlight. Warm. Gentle. The first true sunrise anyone had seen in what felt like forever. Then Rowan blinked. Once. Twice. Then: "...We won?" Nobody answered. Immediately. Because saying it aloud somehow made it real. Then Cassian looked around the battlefield. The horror was gone. The First Door was gone. Even the poisonous darkness had disappeared. He subtly checked on my mood, and when I told him my mother already knew the truth, he seemed relieved as he let out a long sigh. In the distance, there was a crowd gathered around a street vendor selling snacks. Ryan smiled and told me to wait while he went to line up and buy some for me. I smiled with my hands tucked into my pockets, feeling oddly at ease. Suddenly, the honk of a car horn grabbed my attention. I turned to see Ethan, who had somehow returned from the city, striding through the crowd with a group of people holding up a large banner. The words on the banner read, 'Heartless woman Claire Thompson, who toyed with my love for seven years, now abandons me to marry someone else.'
