She stared at him, hurt. “You think I can’t handle it?”
“I think you still expect fairness in everything,” he said quietly. “And that is how people like her win because they expect nothing.”
Her throat tightened. “So dignity doesn’t matter?”
“Dignity doesn’t pay for mercy,” he said, his voice like ice.
Something in her broke then , not out of anger, but frustration. “You defended me out there, and now you talk like I should be grateful to be insulted?”
