I muttered to myself, "Welcome to the middle of nowhere, Chloe. Try not to get murdered." Not that I was actually expecting to get murdered, but this assignment wasn’t my first choice. I could’ve been in New York, writing for a big-name magazine. Instead, I was here. A dusty, forgotten town nobody’s ever heard of, with nothing to do except unravel the mystery of some animal attacks. Great. This was my big break?

"What's this? A mysterious invitation to join the secret society of curious investigators?" I chuckled, breaking the seal and pulling out an intricately folded piece of paper. The words were elegant, each letter a testament to meticulous care: "Intrigue awaits the brave. Midnight of the 11th. The Velvet Shadow. - A.P." A shiver ran down my spine, the implications of the message sinking in. The Velvet Shadow, the place where chaos had erupted just a night ago, was calling me back. Alexei Pushkin had extended an invitation, and the choice to accept or decline lingered in the air like an unspoken challenge.

Yet, with each passing moment, the task seems more impossible than ever. My hands tremble as I pull another ancient tome from the towering stacks. An unwillingness to fail is the only thing pushing me forward. Each page brings a new mystery to solve, as anything written about the twilight is a riddle. I scrutinize every word and symbol in search of anything that resembles truth. I trace the faded ink with my fingertips, trying to absorb every ounce of knowledge I can to decipher the prophecy. "Come on," I whisper under my breath. "There has to be something here."

Detective Sean opened the door of the underground basement, he cringed, seeing the sight before him. Making him retreats his footsteps. The twenty years he had been working as a detective and the the thirty five years he had spent in this town. He hadn’t seen a thing as this. Blood was was all over the wall. There was a writing in blood as well. ‘Don’t look for me, look for me you die.’ It did give him chills. The forensic department were there, running a test on the items on basement. But he couldn’t see them at the moment, the only thing he saw was the blood on the wall. He couldn’t seem to get his eyes off it.

Suddenly Celine felt this prickling sensation behind her neck, as if someone was watching. So she looked around, and her heart skipped a beat when she saw it was her mystery guy in the dark suit. She stared right back, issuing a challenge. ‘Hey there. Took you forever to notice me,’ she thought. ‘Let’s see who gives up first?’ She raised an eyebrow, and he grinned, so she smiled back. Celine felt like some communication passed between them in the few seconds they stared at each other.

Mystery man: it's more like I'm trying to get a girl I like, but it seems so difficult. Me: Really, maybe you have been using the wrong manner of approach. Mystery man: Same thing my mum said, but I'm not giving up. I will still keep trying. Me: Best of luck. Mystery man: So how far writing? Me: Just managed to finish up two chapters. Mystery man: Oh! So how many words do you write everyday? Me: About three thousand, sometimes I can go extreme. Depending on my mood and the readers response. What about you.

“I know this is your kind of story, but don’t get yourself killed over it. Look into it, but don’t do anything reckless. I need you alive to write the damn article.” “Gee, thanks for the concern,” I muttered, but I couldn’t deny the excitement bubbling beneath my fear. This was the first real story I’d had in years, something that wasn’t just roadwork or town meetings. A mystery. It was a real mystery, and I was in the middle of it.
