Writing The First Chapter Novels & Stories

Draven(and his wolves) are the first matured characters I've ever written in a first pov(I mostly do young adults, and also write in third person pov. So I'm trying not to mess him and his inner thoughts up. And not make him cringe worthy. So yes, I'm taking my dear time with each words—making me unbearably slower than ever.(You can also notice my writing style has changed in this vol— different from the first chapter of this book—Arielle's story) So please, bear with me. I deeply apologize for the late updates. These have nothing to do with the late updates these few days though—only the exams do.

“You always said you’d tell the truth when you were ready.” “I don’t want it to be about revenge. Or blame.” “Then don’t write it that way. Write it like you lived it. With grace.” Emma searched his eyes. “And you’d be okay with me telling people about you? About what we are?” Jake grinned. “If you write it, they’ll know exactly why I stayed.” Emma touched his cheek. “Then maybe it’s time.” She began the next morning. It was hard at first. The first chapter opened in a hospital hallway, with sterile air and white walls and silence that rang like bells. She wrote about holding a man’s hand while machines beeped and doctors avoided eye contact.

I wrote the first chapter in November. Not the beginning of the story. That was where I had started with the speeches, the Vegas chapel, the blue dress. But for the book I started somewhere different. I started with the first morning in the hospital, the shaking in the car, the way the ceiling of our bedroom had been the wrong ceiling for four seconds that had been the worst seconds of my life. I started with after. It was harder than the speeches.

There are so few views, now that Goodnovel provided me a platform, but I am more than happy to continue this story and perhaps, make it my first completed novel. So now allow me to talk about the novel itself. I have talked to my editor about it and I came to know that my first few chapters are quite odd. The beginning chapter itself barely had any conversation. Well… To be honest, it can’t be helped since I wrote it on my first attempt in writing. I have no background. No experience. I read. I read. My first book, Laws of the Pack, had an average of around 5000 words per chapter which lead me to have very frequent writer blocks since I had to constantly think of extra text or out of no where context to fill up the gaps. It’s… it’s enough.” He looked behind him, at the bustling bridge of the Stalwart Friend. “We’ve decided. We’re not just mechanics anymore. We’re going to be scribes. They weren't tears of grief or fear, but of a hope so deep it felt like roots anchoring me to the universe.

The Ghostwriter looked up at the white line high above, smiling sadly. “I didn’t write the title of Chapter 100,” he said. “Nobody did. The Author left it blank on purpose. She said only the characters could decide what the final page is called.” Suddenly, the giant Eye swung its red light toward the book. “Found you,” the machine voice hissed. The book started burning at the edges. “Listen!” the Ghostwriter yelled over the crackling flames. “I can send you to the 100th chapter now. But there’s a catch. To get there, you have to skip Chapters 61 to 99.”

I steel my resolve, my chest swelling with joy, I quickly type a brief message to my agent. *I have the opening chapters ready. Sending them over now.* With a steady hand, I export the file, attach the fresh chapters I just wrote, and hover my finger over the screen. Without letting myself hesitate for another second, I hit "Submit."
