After brainstorming, it’s super helpful to establish a basic outline. I used to think outlines were constraining, but now I see them as a roadmap for my creativity. It doesn’t have to be detailed; just a few bullet points that capture the beginning, middle, and end can do wonders to guide your writing process. This allows you to remain focused while giving space for spontaneous creativity as you delve deeper into your story.

Lastly, don’t forget to set aside dedicated time for writing! Treat your writing sessions like appointments—commit to them, and honor that time. Forget the pressure to hook everyone in the first line. I’ve seen more writers paralyzed by that advice than anything else. My opening chapter finally clicked when I stopped trying to write a ‘strong’ opening and just wrote the scene I’d been daydreaming about for months—the one with the character already in motion, dealing with a small, specific problem that hinted at the larger world. Your first chapter doesn’t need to explain the magic system or introduce the villain’s master plan. It just needs to make me believe in a person and a moment. If I care about why that scribe is so afraid, I’ll follow him anywhere. The rest of the book is for answering the questions you plant. Start with a person, not a premise.
