A rogue lunges; I meet it, feel the give of throat under my hand, the crack of spine when I twist. Another goes low; I jump, boot connecting with jaw, sending it sprawling back down the embankment. The third is smarter, hanging back, waiting for an opening while I’m busy with the others.
