My eyes widened when the lights went off and Lilian walked away without saying a word to respond. Dimmed lights suddenly appeared on the ground where people lay on the ground as if unconscious, or more specifically, coming back to their senses. My eyes searched them for my wife to find her sitting down, her hands rubbing her eyes as she looked around, her eyes adjusting to the light around her. He breathed in Phineas’s scent, a low, possessive rumble starting in his chest. Outside the heavy oak doors, the hallway was a tunnel of shadows. Xavier stood there, his hand frozen inches from the handle. He heard the murmur of voices. He heard the wet slap of the blood covenant. His jaw creaked, his teeth grinding together so hard he felt the enamel chip. The 'Gentle Alpha' mask didn't just crack; it fell away, revealing a hollow, black-flagged void. He saw the future in that room—a future where he was a ghost, a third wheel in a massacre.
