The wind in the clearing suddenly dies down to a complete stop. Jodie pulls her arms away from Evelyn and Queen Vanya, taking one slow, shaky step forward. Her head lifts, and when her eyes snap toward Magnus, they aren't their usual soft color anymore. They are flashing with a bright, luminous gold that cuts right through the darkness of the forest. A strange, warm pressure fills the clearing. A blinding, pure golden light begins to radiate straight out from Jodie's skin, glowing so bright that it washes away the dark shadows of the trees.

Fiona Stars dance around me, a dizzy, tilting feeling washing over me as the room is completely washed in white. No color. No sound. No people. No danger. Everything is gone except for me and the necklace floating before my face. It pulses with a yellowish, blue light, not unlike how the moon shines in the night sky. The light isn’t bright, but it shines with no hint of fading after a moment.

I didn’t have any close friends I could visit, and my phone kept blinking with notifications—more fake news about my wedding. Apparently, some random man had appeared in public, pretending to be my secret lover, and now the media was eating it up. Meanwhile, my name? Completely dragged through the dirt. Smeared like I was some shameless cheat. But whatever. That didn’t bother me. I’d just messed up my eyeliner, thrown on something half-decent, and stepped out of my room—completely forgetting I hadn’t buckled my heel properly. As soon as I moved, my ankle twisted, and I went flying toward the ground.

His hips ground against mine as he whispered my name over and over, a mantra only he knew this intimately. Vetur flared, energy zinging through me. My power was back. It reached for him and his fire answered. In a daze, I watched as they mingled and became one. Pure white and glacial blue intertwined with burning red, vibrant yellow, and glowing orange. I could feel the train’s presence now, a massive, onrushing shape that my eyes refused to track because I refused to give them permission. For a fraction of a second, someone’s resolve cracked. One of the nameless players behind us cursed and spun, unable to help themselves. I didn’t see his face. I saw the **flash**. I couldn't tell if I was overthinking things, but the symptoms seemed to be returning. The lightness in my head returned, sharper and more disorienting than ever. My vision blurred, and for a moment, I thought I saw flashes—figures, brief, haunting images—flickering in the corners of my eyes, but they were so brief that I had doubted if I truly saw them or not. I stumbled toward the mirror, praying, begging that the glow hadn't returned. I didn't want to see it. Not now. Not again, but I was wrong. It has returned. Brighter than ever.

The building's silhouettes suddenly became the dark night sky and the lights from their windows suddenly were twinkling. "Isn't that beautiful?" I asked when I saw a broken stoplight, the red light was blinking and the green and yellow once didn't seem to work. I thought it was aesthetically pleasing, under the gloom of the night, along the empty streets and silently passing cars. The slow blinking of that stop light seemed to harmonize with the quietness of the evening. I looked at Edgar and he was frowning at the stop light. "Pretty much could cause traffic, goodness, that should be fixed," he said and I rolled my eyes at him.

And then there were her eyes. I’d noticed it first during breakfast today when I stared at her. A molten yellow glow—not gold, not the typical wolf sheen—but something richer, deeper, as though magma ran beneath her skin and looked out at the world through her gaze. And now, in the dull glow of the classroom lights, I saw it again. A flicker. Her lashes lowered and raised, and there it was, unmistakable: liquid yellow, molten and alive. I froze. I’d heard of that color before.
