I've been monitoring him as you asked.” I closed my eyes and leaned my head back against the headrest. Some small, pathetic part of me had hoped, no, prayed, that Kai would reach out to his secretary. That there would be a thread, however thin, to follow. But Kai was smarter than that. He probably knew I'd watch Edward. “Keep watching. If he so much as—” My phone beeped. I pulled it away from my ear and stared at the screen. The name that glowed there made my breath catch in my throat.

Kane's POV: I watched as Sya dragged her ‘cousin' Edi to her room, both arms linked with his right one. Edi's presence was boiling my blood and I couldn’t keep my eyes away from where his filthy hand had been lying on her shoulder. It wasn't Sya whom I didn't trust. I trusted her with my entire existence, trusted her love. It was that stupid Edison who was making the back of my hand itch. The way he was looking at Sya, even a fool could tell he liked her.

An intimate cry interrupted his thoughts. Eddie Sayer approached Kai with his usual grin. Fat, bubbly, and easy-going by nature, Sayer is loved by all detectives, and he is Kai's most trusted person in tense situations. "You're back at last," cried Sayer, shaking his hand warmly. Brown eyes glittered beneath the wet brim of his hat. "I see you've just come out of your office. There is no doubt that Sir Grant has given you a difficult task to make up for your long absence."

I found them in the living room. "You will respect her as you do me. If you can't, leave," Khai growled. Eddie was kneeling, kissing the ground with his forehead as if bowing to him. His body trembled and I could see tears glistening in the light. His jaw clenched. Khai's eyes were a merciless icy blue. His expression twisted in anger. What had Eddie done? I could feel Khai's power, only slightly. I could only imagine the immense pain he bore into the back of Eddie's head. It was a gentle pain in my head, like the first signs of a headache.

After my morning outburst, I felt completely drained for the rest of the day. I kind of just went through the motions as I was reintroduced to Eric and Daniella. They were both pleasant enough, though the atmosphere was a little uncomfortable. I mean, we'd all met before, so it was odd being reintroduced under a different name. Their little boy Ed was adorable, and clearly very loved by his Uncle Kai. Kaiden seemed to take to Ed quickly, coddling him and looking after him like he was his own little brother. The age difference didn't seem to matter to him as he played his games and with his toys in the sandpit.
