We turned and walked back through the gates before they could shout questions, and by the time we got back to the library I was soaking wet and laughing.
"That was insane," I said.
"That was perfect," Adrian corrected, kissing me. "They can't manufacture drama if we refuse to give them any."
Back at dinner our guests applauded and Adrian's mother stood to make a toast.
"I haven't earned the right to give parental advice," she said, her voice shaking. "But I'm going to anyway. Hold onto each other. Life is going to throw everything it can at you, and the only way through is together."
