She was in the kitchen when I came through the door, Sam at the table with his textbooks arranged in the system only he understood, both of them looking up when I came in.
“Look who decided to reappear,” Sam said, not even glancing up at first. The line landed too clean to be spontaneous — he’d been saving it, polishing it, probably rehearsing it in his head like it was a presentation slide.
“Glad you’re happy to see me,” I said, setting my bag down like evidence.
He finally looked up, slow and deliberate. “Ah. International woman of mystery.” A pause. “Did the mystery remember to bring me something, or is this one of those ‘the experience is the gift’ situations?”
