The line landed too clean to be spontaneous — he’d been saving it, polishing it, probably rehearsing it in his head like it was a presentation slide. “Glad you’re happy to see me,” I said, setting my bag down like evidence. He finally looked up, slow and deliberate. “Ah. International woman of mystery.” A pause. “Did the mystery remember to bring me something, or is this one of those ‘the experience is the gift’ situations?”

It was selfish, but Sam didn’t think she could stomach that kind of rejection from him. Sam sighed pushing a strand of hair out of her eyes and blinking back tears that threatened to fall. She looked at the open textbook opened. Sam tried to go back to reading the paragraph, but like the last five times she tried to read it, Sam still didn’t get what she was reading. Her phone came to life, vibrating loudly across the surface of the small coffee table. Sam quickly picked it up. “Hello.” “Hey, how’s my best girl?” Tabby replied. Sam smiled. “Oh fine I guess.” Sam’s gaze went back to the skyline and watching the clouds cover the setting sun.

{SAMANTHA’S POV} Samantha raced the BMW on the outskirts of Boston, Sam in the passenger seat beside her, heading along the highway towards Salem. She was increasingly annoyed at the growing difficulty in finding his dad. She’d been sure, when she’d seen those Facebook messages, when Sam had told her with such excitement that he’d been in touch with him, that this would be easy. She would just take him to his dad’s house, and from there it would be a direct path to the sword.

He flung the book at the wall and then hid it again, wishing he could burn it like Jinnot, the young girl in the third story who was burned alive. Something about the plight of the innocent girl had affected Sam though. He identified with her on a deeper level and that released some of the nervous tension he kept bottled up. Later that night he dug the book out again and finished it by torch light. Before he recovered he’d read all three books twice over and had become an irredeemable horror fan.
