Everyone was involved. “Why are you telling me this?” I asked, my voice quieter now. She studied me for a long moment, her expression unreadable. “Because,” she said finally, “I want to see what you’ll do.” That answer made my blood run cold. “This is a game to you,” I whispered. “Everything is a game,” she replied lightly. “You just never learned how to play.” “I’m not like you.” “I know,” she said, almost gently. “That’s why you keep losing.” Her words hit harder than I expected. For a moment, I couldn’t respond. She pushed herself off the wall and walked toward the door, like she was already done with me.

I could tell he was struggling desperately not to lose control. Since childhood, we had always competed against each other. And every single time, I had beaten him at his own game. That single word— Loser. It had struck directly at one of his deepest insecurities. Frankly, I was surprised he had not already lunged across the arena to attack me.

“I win.” Malphaus snarled from Lara's mouth. His pure hatred was rolling off in waves. “You cheated?” “Don't be petty demon. You cheated. I saw you push the knight in.” “But, you're scared of playing chess. I picked right. You always lose.” “That's where you're wrong, Malphaus. I was never scared of playing. I always lost to my brother on purpose. Winning all the time was never fun.” He faced down, flashes of my childhood burning into my mind. “Will you keep to your word?” My hand stretched and he stared at it hopelessly.

He held his head in agony, a sound like a trapped beast wailing in his throat. He finally understood. He had completely lost his treasure.

Someone beside him leaned in to say something. "Mm." His voice was low. Impossible to read. He didn't look at me once. Vanessa, though, was all smiles, dragging me into game after game. And somehow, no matter what we played, I kept losing. Drink after drink burned down my throat. My stomach was on fire. The cards hit the table. I lost again.

"The game where everyone loses, the game where there are no winners, only survivors. The game where the only way out is to burn everything down and start over." I stood up, my hand on my stomach, my voice steady, my heart cold. "Then I'll burn it down, I'll burn it all down, and I'll build something new from the ashes."

“It’s instinct.” I narrowed my eyes. “You’re so annoying!” “You say that every time you lose.” “That’s because you win every time!” He leaned closer. “You want to quit?” “No,” I said, picking up my cards again. “I want to win once. Just once.” “You’ll have to earn it.” We played for over an hour. The sun moved across the tiles. I lost every game. He kept sipping espresso like he was watching TV. Calm, relaxed, smug. I cursed under my breath after every round. He didn’t stop smiling.

Lieve heard him uttering to her. “I couldn't hurt her, let alone taking her life,” His words made her dig her nails more harshly against her own palm. “If you know you have already become a loser then destroy the winner, Zace,” Lieve's words made him snap his eyes in her direction, where he found her rigid gaze already on him. “It's not always about the winner or a loser, sometimes, it's just about….. ruining the game to tackle your loss,” she said to him, peering right into his intoxicated, reddened eyes.

A little competition never hurt anyone, right? And of course, I was determined to win this time. Liam had been winning all the games for days. He's such an expert gamer, and no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t beat him. But I had a plan, a little trick up my sleeve.
