The reviews began arriving on Thursday. Patricia Osei had told me to read them but not to organize my understanding of the book around them because the book had been written for the women in the long middle and the women in the long middle were not the reviewers. The reviewers were the first room the book passed through on its way to the people it was for. The first review I read was from a literary publication that described the book as unflinching and specific and written with the particular authority of someone who had lived inside the thing she was describing rather than observing it from outside.

As for the rest, she decided to just continue to save it. Now she was even more determined to finish her next book. Meanwhile, in other parts of the world, her book was gaining fans. The publishing company, Wordsmith Literature, was overwhelmed with how good the reviews were from the individuals they sent copies to. “This is amazing! To think she’s still a teenager?!” Noah Green, the publisher at Wordsmith Literature exclaimed as he read the reviews. “These reviews could only be seen on books by best-selling authors!” “I agree! Which is why I really brought this forward as soon as I read it.” The editor, Natasha Collins was full of smiles, proud of the decision she made.
