Ashley teased, pointing at Garnet. Garnet simply smiled, while John cleared his throat awkwardly. "Okay… maybe this year," he said hesitantly. Garnet turned to look at him, eyes wide with surprise. He had no choice. He had to lie. "That’s settled then! I’ll call Esmeralda later—I have good news for her!" Diana said excitedly. Then, the unexpected happened. "I don’t want to get pregnant." The room fell into silence. All three of them turned to look at Garnet.

So I will stick to lying. "I promise"

“Oh, so you’ve seen the papers, haven’t you?” “You said you were going to contact them to change it.” “I lied,” she answered carelessly. “You know, the same way you lied to Dylan Bass and told him my proposal was yours.” “That’s what this is about?” “What? You think I was just going to let you get away with pulling such a dirty trick? Of course, that’s what this is about? How does it feel to not be given the credit you deserve, Dominic? I bet it’s an amazing feeling.”

Then said it, flat and quiet. “You’re not okay.” I swallowed. Hard. “Do I look that bad?” She shrugged. “You look… um- beautiful? Like um-you could kill someone and get away with it.” “Cute.” “Wanna talk?” I didn’t. But I nodded anyway. We sat at the counter with a cup of tea between us that neither of us touched. “He lies,” I said. “So quietly. Like he’s supposed to.” “About what?” “About everything.”

All of which were true, even if the truth itself was a lie. When Noah graduated college, I cried harder than I had in years. He got a job in New York big lights, big stage, big world. I packed his bags and kissed his forehead. “Call me every Sunday,” I said, fighting tears. He hugged me so tightly that I almost broke and told him everything. But I didn’t. Months passed.
