The tapping came one last time—three impatient beats—and then stopped. From the dark, something answered the light with a low, almost subsonic note that sank through bone. The mural’s Minotaur eyes seemed to catch it and glow.
Paulo whispered a prayer he hadn’t said since childhood. “Kyrie eleison.”
Jessica lowered her hands, palms tingling. “We don’t feed it,” she said. “Not yet. We mark it, we document, we find a bypass.”
