Lindsay was in her kitchen when she heard the front door open. She looked to see Max walking in with Cat right behind him. Max saw her in the kitchen and walked to where she was standing. He looked at her for a moment, then took a mug from the cabinet and poured himself a cup of coffee.

“Hi, Max, come on in and help yourself. Would you like a cup of coffee?” Lindsay asked him after he had leaned against the counter beside her. She turned to Cat and asked, “Cat, would you like some coffee?”

“Why do you keep staring at me? That isn’t going to do anything to me,” the man told her.“I know it won’t. I am just trying to understand how you and James could lie to me for so long. I am looking at you, wondering if the relationship I had with James was nothing but a way to look more normal while you both did this. I am wondering if James was even his real name. Most of all, I am wondering how I did not see all this when I was living it. Was I that naive or just stupid?” Lindsay asked. The man was now sitting, looking down at the floor. With each thing she had said to him, his head had gotten lower, and now he would no longer look at her. “Paul, I only want you to tell me one thing. Did James ever actually love me?” Lindsay asked. He looked up at her and answered, “Yes. He started to have feelings for you after you got married, and that was part of the problem. That was not supposed to happen, and the two of you having a kid definitely wasn’t.” Before he could say more, the do

“What have you done?!” Lindsay demanded from Wren. “Just go inside so we can close the door and talk about things,” Wren told her calmly, motioning for her to enter the room. She walked in and stood near the corner of the room as Wren and Big Bob made their way inside. Big Bob looked into her eyes, and she could see that he was trying to hide his happiness about what was happening. She was getting more worried as Wren closed the door. “How am I supposed to help you hide this?” she asked Wren as soon as the door closed. “That, my lovely wife, is the beauty of it. You don’t need to,” Wren told her as he took both of her hands and held them. “We are talking about kidnapping, unlawful detention, and most likely assault. How can you be so calm about this?” Lindsay asked. “Because this person does not exist,” Wren said, pointing to the man in the chair. “He is officially dead. Now let me ask you, how do you kidnap someone who no longer exists?” Wren nodded to Big Bob, who reached ov

They had been driving for a while before she asked Big Bob, “So where exactly are we going? I can tell it’s in the general direction of that compound. Can you give me more than that?”“Wren asked me to come and pick you up and take you to where he is. That is the only thing that he wanted me to tell you right now,” Bob answered.“You are not making me feel better about any of this. That includes why you called in sick and clearly are not.”“Wren asked me to help him with something,” Big Bob said, letting out a sigh. “Lindsay, this is all stuff that he needs to tell you about, not me.”Lindsay did not ask any more questions. She knew that Big Bob would tell her everything if he could. Her mind was racing about what this could involve. Was there another creature that Wren needed her help with? Had he done something that would cause a problem if her department had to investigate it? The possibilities were almost endless. They turned onto a lonely gravel road. Bob pulled to the side of t

It was nearing 7 p.m., and Lindsay and Dillon were watching a movie when there was a knock at the door. Before Lindsay could get to her feet, it opened, and Big Bob walked in. “Hey, Dillon,” Big Bob said as he walked toward where she was sitting. “Lindsay, I need you to come with me.”“Dillon,” Lindsay said, glancing over to where he was sitting.“Going,” Dillon answered, heading straight to his room and closing the door behind him.Lindsay looked at Big Bob and said, “I thought you were sick. You look like you had a miracle recovery?”“Wren asked me to come and get you,” he said quietly. “For what? Why didn’t he call me and tell me he wanted to meet somewhere?” Lindsay asked as she swallowed hard.“Lindsay, please, go change clothes. Make sure you grab your leather gloves and bring your gun.”“OK,” Lindsay said as she stood and studied him carefully. “Give me a minute.”Lindsay walked to her bedroom and quickly changed into jeans, a T-shirt, and boots. She picked up her gun, clippe

It was nearing the end of the day when Little Bob walked into Lindsay’s office and set a cup of coffee on her desk before sitting in the chair across from her. As soon as she looked at him, she knew something was up. “Alright, what’s going on?” she asked him. He took a sip of coffee from the cup he was holding and innocently answered, “I have no idea what you are talking about.” “Really? You know that if I drink that coffee now, there is even less chance I will sleep tonight than there is normally. I can tell from the look on your face that there is something that you want to say, but you also don’t want to say it,” she said as she closed the file in front of her and leaned back in her chair. “I have also noticed that you have our new deputies in their own cars today. So, what is going on?” “Big Bob won’t be in tonight because he is sick. That means Andy is the ranking officer working. He should be good with Annie, but Ellie will be on that shift too. That makes me a little concer

Viktor had just walked into the sheriff’s department when his sister, Cat, grabbed his arm as he passed by the front counter. She was on the phone, talking, and getting the information about a complaint that was being reported. Viktor stopped and waited for her to finish talking to the caller. While he stood there, he could see Sheriff Gold in her office going over paperwork. Cat hung up the phone, began to write the address down for him, and said, “That was an individual calling to report that someone is hanging around an abandoned house down the road from where he lives.”“What else did he say?” Viktor asked as he took the address from her. “Just that it is a dark-colored sedan, and some shady-looking guy was walking into the house. He also said no one has lived there for years, and he is certain that no one has permission to be there,” she told him. “How can I ever thank you for sending me on this?” Viktor asked her flatly. Cat gave him a wicked smile and answered, “I don’t kn

The following day, Lindsay was out of bed early. She had dozed off a couple of times during the night after their uninvited guest showed up, but had only slept for a few minutes each time. Walking into the kitchen, she found Wren pouring himself a cup of coffee. “Good morning,” he said, pouring a

The night wore on as Lindsay and Wren waited for the team to finish when their home phone rang at almost precisely midnight. Wren picked it up, looked at the caller ID, and then answered it. “Hello,” he answered. After just a moment of listening, he said, “She’s awake, so you get to tell her all a

The rest of the time they were waiting for the truck, Annie was the only one talking, and it was all to Viktor. Viktor seemed to be delighted with Annie’s constant chatter. Little Bob and Big Bob had moved to the far side of the loading dock, away from them. It was clear they had just about had it

As they drove to the location where the creature had been reported, Lindsay began receiving text messages telling which schools were closing early because of the storm. Just as they reached the scene, she received a text saying that Dillon’s school was closing at 1 p.m. She did not want him to be a
