Chapter 98 The Royal Village

Art’s POV

Nikolai's eyes rapidly moved, taking in the beauty of the royal castle. The halls seem to go on forever, and the ceilings are ridiculously tall and arched to a peak.

On this side of the castle, the ceilings are dark mahogany wood. The halls are lined with tall arched windows from floor to ceiling.

The royal flag is almost everywhere you look, along with statues ranging from life-size to miniature ones sitting on pedestals. This is the warriors’ hall, so every statue and picture is of famous royal warriors. To be honored in this hall, you would have had to have done something significant, like led and won a great battle, been significantly wounded to protect a royal member, or have given your life for a royal member.

Which is why I wasn't surprised when Nikolai's eyes lit up, and he pointed to Arthur's picture and statue.

“Holy shit! Arthur has a statue?” he asked, pulling from my grasp to get a better look.

I chuckled at my little mate. His are eyes wide with wonder, sp

Hi everyone! I am so sorry I disappeared. I won't give any excuses, but I'm back, and I'm back for good this time, or at least until this book and "The Darkness Within” is finished. The holidays are over, kids are back in school, and my husband's back to work (end of year/holiday vacation), so I am finally able to focus on “A Beta's Heart” full-time again. Updates will be daily for the most part, though I'm sure I will miss a day here and there. This book will be my main focus until it is done, then I will turn my attention to “The Darkness Within.” Thank you so much to those who stuck with me, and waited for me to come back. That really means so much to me, more than you know! 💗

  • A Beta's Heart   Chapter 97 Dinner

Art's POV My body was stiff, every muscle tensed as I sat at the large ballroom table. This isn't where I expected we would sit. I knew we would be in a formal dining room, but I assumed it would be the smaller, more intimate one, not one with a table big enough to seat 50-plus people. It was quickly becoming clear that this wasn't an innocent dinner with my father. He was trying to prove something, but what? Was he trying to make me feel guilty for leaving all those years ago? Did he think seeing everyone I left behind would make me not want to leave again? Was that his plan? They were all here, every person that stood in the throne room when I entered it are now seated at the ridiculously long table. I don't know what my father is trying to accomplish, but whatever it is, he won't! The best he can do is make me feel guilty, but it won't keep me here. Nothing will!My body tenses further the longer I sit here. I fight the urge to let my eyes roam to the right and see exactly who my

  • A Beta's Heart   Chapter 96 The past

Third Person's POVArt began pacing the room when everyone began entering the portal one by one with their mate at their side. The more people that entered, the closer it was to their turn, and the closer it was to their turn, the more Nikolai could feel Art's panic. The smaller Alpha moved forward, stepping in front of his mate and stopping him in his tracks of nervously pacing. Nikolai grabbed his Alpha's face, forcing eye contact.“What's wrong? I thought you agreed to this dinner. Did you not?” Art sighed and dropped his forehead against Nikolai's.“Yes, I agreed to dinner, but that doesn't mean I want to go. It's been a long time since I've set foot in the kingdom, and I swore I'd never return. I agreed only because my father invited your friends and family. I saw the excitement in their eyes at the idea of seeing the kingdom, and I get it. If I've never lived there, I'd want to visit it too. But I have lived there, and…” Art paused, taking a deep breath, then slowly exhaling.

  • A Beta's Heart   Chapter 95 Nerves

Third Person's POV Nikolai frets over his clothes, running his hands over the front of his shirt, trying to straighten it further than it already is. He has already straightened it one too many times, yet he still feels something isn't right. He smoothes his hand over his hair, praying it hasn't frizzed up since he last looked in the mirror. His nerves are through the roof; he fears he looks nowhere near representable enough for dinner with the King.Nikolai turns to Art and tugs on his arm, worry shows in his eyes as he looks up at the older Alpha.“Maybe I should go back and change? I think I can find something nicer.” Art sighs and smiles as he grabs Nikolai's hip and pulls him against his chest. “You look perfect! You don't need to change a thing,” Art said, his fingers gliding along his mate's jaw as his head dips. His lips lightly brush against Nikolai's teasingly, and the smaller Alpha whines as he grips Art's shirt and tugs him closer, needing to press their lips together,

  • A Beta's Heart   Chapter 94 Father, Daughter

Nikolai's POV The fresh scent of soap was all I could smell now; it filled the bathroom with the lingering steam. I felt my cheeks heat up as I remembered what his father had said. I can't believe Art let me go in there knowing I smelled like sex. Like him. Like his essence. My face became hotter, and the heat traveled to my ears. I covered my face and groaned. How many people smelled that? I wondered, but at the same time, I didn't want to know. It would only worsen my embarrassment.I raked my fingers through my hair, gently working the tangles from the curls. I applied a little styling cream to keep the frizz at bay, and I was ready to face everyone again. Though this time without smelling like Art just came all over me. I froze with my hand on the doorknob. I felt heat blooming low in my stomach as I pictured myself covered in his essence. I squeezed my thighs together and groaned. “Fuck!” I cursed under my breath, turning back to the sink to splash my face with cold water. Afte

  • A Beta's Heart   Chapter 93 Philip

Third Person's POV “Son… It's been a long time.In fact, it's been too long,” King Philip said, stepping forward to get a better look at his son. Art didn't know what to say; he was suddenly at a loss for words. He's been running from his father for 20 years, but even so, he would be lying if he said he didn't miss him. “Do you know how much money and resources I had to use these past 20 years to find you? Do you know how much of a headache you've caused for not just me, but your mother, your sister, brother, and the entire Kingdom! What were you thinking?”Art scuffed and stepped back, away from his father. “So typical of you! Here I was thinking I missed you, but then you opened your mouth, and I see nothing has changed!” Art said, his chest tightened. For a moment, he thought this reunion would turn out the way he always wished it would. But his father is proving that nothing will ever change. He will remain the same ornery, overly strict man he's always been.“Is that so? And w
