Chapter Forty-Five
Carter leaned in and pressed his lips against mine, sending an electric shock of excitement through my body. Our tongues darted in and out of each others mouths, with a passion unlike anything I'd ever felt before. The kiss was different than any we had ever shared. It was genuine and heartfelt. It made me practically melt right there in front of him.
After a moment, Carter slowly broke the kiss. We gazed into each others eyes and it was like time stood still. For that fleeting second, nothing could touch us. Nothing could hurt us and separate us. I had no idea what it was that made me feel so safe right then. All I knew is that I felt invincible.
I'm not sure how much time passed. It could have been three seconds or five minutes that we just enjoyed each others quiet company. After a bit, though, Carter spoke up.

Carter hung up the phone and slowly turned to face me. The normal relaxed and carefree expression on his face had changed after speaking to Lance. He now looked tense and stressed. His voice was soothing and I instantly felt at home. The moment the elevator doors opened up on the main floor, I could hear the sounds of the crowd coming from outside of the building. It was muffled, but still loud enough so that I knew that the media hadn't gone home yet. I stepped out and glanced toward the front.
