Chapter 2 Her First Love Came First

"Kelsey…" I searched my memory for anything associated with that name, but I came up completely empty. Still, just thinking about the name left me feeling strangely unsettled.

Oliver popped a piece of apple into my mouth and started telling me how devoted I'd been to Kelsey.

"And get this. She's the reason why you have amnesia in the first place. You wouldn't be suffering from head trauma if she hadn't been so busy trying to save her first love. Still, you know what pisses me off the most?

"She hasn't visited you once ever since you were hospitalized. Instead, she's been taking care of that man, who only suffered a few scrapes from the accident."

Oliver grew more worked up with every word that came hurtling out of his mouth. Toward the end of it, he even looked like he wanted nothing more than for the apple in his hand to transform into Kelsey so he could stab her a few times.

Just then, the hospital room door swung open, and a woman walked in.

She had long, slightly curled hair, sporting elegant makeup across her fair, rounded cheeks. All in all, she looked delicate and alluring.

I was still wondering who she was when she finally started talking, her tone full of accusation. "So, this is the amnesia you were talking about? Do you think it's funny to mess with me?"

I stared at her as I thought to myself, 'Lady, just who the hell are you? Why would I want to mess with you? What's going on here?'

I was about to say something when Oliver beat me to the punch. "So, you've finally decided to show up, Kelsey! What, were you waiting until they put him in a coffin?"

Honestly, he was right. Did I have to be in a coffin before she would bother to pay me a visit? I'd rather she showed up while I was still alive and kicking, if it were all the same to her.

Wait. Kelsey? Oliver just told me that she was my wife. But was she really my wife? If she was, then why couldn't I remember anything about her?

Kelsey ignored Oliver.

When she saw the bandages still wrapped around my head, she sighed, sat beside me, and took my hand. "I'm sorry, Landon. I know I shouldn't have left you alone, but Cameron had just had a stent put in his heart. He might not have survived if I hadn't gone to save him."

I stared at the complete stranger before me and recalled what Oliver had just told me about our past.

Apparently, I'd fallen for Kelsey at first sight and pursued her relentlessly.

I'd even given up the chance to study abroad for her sake.

When she decided to start her own business, I put in both money and effort to help her find resources. From what he'd told me, I'd even developed stomach problems from drinking too much at business functions just so she could benefit from those connections.

And what did Kelsey do to repay me?

Well, she immediately dropped everything and went abroad to her first love, Cameron Sheffield, when she found out he needed heart surgery. She left me behind even though I'd been hospitalized with stomach bleeding after drinking too much.

They returned yesterday, so I went to pick Kelsey up. Alas, he wasn't happy about it, so she got into another car with him to appease him.

All things went to hell when a speeding car ran a red light. My car was in the front, so I took the worst of the impact. As their car was behind mine, it slammed into theirs after it swerved wildly upon impact.

I was unconscious when they found me and was promptly hospitalized. Cameron was shaken up by the accident and had only suffered a few scrapes, yet Kelsey went straight to his hospital room to take care of him.

She hadn't bothered to visit me until she heard I'd woken up.

She reached out to touch my face, but I leaned away.

My guarded reaction caught her off guard.

"Who are you? You must have mistaken me for someone else. Why are you touching me?" I swiftly withdrew my hand from hers.

However, Kelsey immediately grabbed it again. "Are you angry with me? I'm sorry. I know I'm in the wrong, Landon. I'll come right back to you as soon as he's recovered. I won't ever leave your side again."
