Chapter Six
Vanessa’s POV
I looked at him as if the very sight of him disgusted me. “I hate you,” I spat. “Your heart is dry. You are heartless. Inhumane”
Kai grabbed me by the waist. I tried to pry his hands away from me, but they wouldn’t budge. It was like they were made of steel. We were so close to kissing, but I would never let him kiss me. Never! If it were the last thing I did before I die. I glared at him.
His eyes hovered over my face, and then his lips curled up in a smile. “I adore you,” I successfully pulled away from him.
He pointed outside. “Now go out there and sit pretty for the maids to do their work. With that, he walked out of the room, leaving me standing. My knees slid straight to the floor like they were made of jelly. Tears began to pour from my eyes. I dragged myself like a ragdoll and left his room. It was surreal. I couldn’t believe this was happening.
“Miss Vanessa, you are back,” the older maid said with a smug smile as she exchanged a glance with the other maids. They giggled. “I told you she would be back.” Their voice sounded so much like the cackling of witches. Please have a seat, we need to finish your makeup”. I glanced at her and walked right into the room. A maid pushed the chair out for me, but I was not ready to sit. Let alone put on makeup. The oldest maid walked over to a mannequin I had not noticed. On it was a white ball gown. It screamed of wealth and fashion. Looking at it made me feel sick.
“What do you think, Miss Vanessa?” the older maid smiled. “You were away all night, so we had to choose something for you.”
I shot her a look of utter contempt, and she glared at me. “Come on, girls, help our bride get ready.” They moved to come close, and I raised a hand.
“No one is coming an inch close,” I warned.
The older maid narrowed her eyes at me and answered. “No way am I letting you get prepared on your own. I mean, this is the alpha’s wedding for crying out loud,” she turned to the maids. “We don’t want you going out there and looking like a clown,” they fell over in laughter.
Their laughter cut through me. My hands curled into fists. My eyes swept across the room. Searching for a way out, until an idea sprang up like an unwanted growth in my head. I raced to the drawer and began to rummage through it.
“What is she doing?’ a maid said. I turned around and charged at them. Thy screamed.
“She has a knife!” they gasped.
They retreated. “If any of you come an inch closer, you can kiss your lives goodbye,” I warned. And no, it was not a knife but a scissors. Immediately, I ran to the wedding dress and began to cut it to shreds.
“She’s destroying the dress!” one of them said
“What are you going to do?” They turned to the older maid. She fixed me with a disgusted stare, and then she walked away.
“I don’t want to get married! Let me go,” I screamed while ripping the dress apart. An idea popped into my head. I took the scissors and drove them straight into my arms.
“She stabbed herself,” another voice piped in.
“What are we going to do?” another whispered in a nervous voice. I sat on the floor with the ruined dress that was blood-stained. My arm was hurting, but it was nothing compared to what I was feeling in my heart. If only I could buy time. Yes. I could think of something. Of course, I could not be the Luna with this many scars.
“Your highness:” they chorused behind me. I jerked my head around to see Kai walk into the room. I ground my teeth, shooting daggers his way.
Kai went over to seat in a chair. He didn’t say a word and began to go through his phone. My heart was pounding. What was he going to do now? Hit me? I was scared that he was silent. God knew what he was thinking. After a while, he stopped. A guard walked into the room, and he handed the phone over to him. The guard stooped to my level. He shoved the phone into my face.
My eyes widened in horror at what I saw.
“No! No! Please!” I tried to grab the phone, but the guard snatched it away. He handed the phone back to Kai. I crawled to his feet and grabbed him by the leg.
“Why will you do that?”
He began to go through his phone, ignoring me. “I am talking to you!” Kai slowly turned and faced me.
“I warned you, didn’t I?”
And then I fell over crying. “Please don’t hurt them. Please”
“Cooperate and I will not,” and he walked out of the room.
Within minutes, the maids pulled me up to stand. They swiftly bandaged my arm and stopped the bleeding. Then, when I sat, they began to put on the makeup. By the time they were through, I couldn’t recognize who stared right back at me in the mirror. But my eyes were the same. Dead. Cold. And as they say, the eyes never lie. The image of a tied-up Eugene and Alena poked me in the brain. My eyes watered.
An hour later, I was standing right beside Kai and ready to recite the vows. I glanced down and gasped. The crowd was tense. Some smiled brightly, while some whispered. I could see their eyes sizing me up to down. Judging me. The disdain in their eyes was so palpable I could test it.
The werewolf priest’s voice brought me to Vega. Back to my reality. Marrying Kai. His voice was formal and steady.
“Kai Vega, do you take Vanessa Fessler as you’re lawfully wedded mate and Luna?” The words hung heavy in the air. I pleaded with my eyes. We didn’t have to do this. We can—
“I do,” he answered without hesitation. My heart sank.
Now it was my turn. The werewolf priest turned his attention to me. I swallowed. “Vanessa Fessler, do you take Kai Vega to be you’re lawfully wedded mate and alpha?”
Kai stared into my eyes. My throat tightened, and my sight became blurry. I couldn’t bring myself to say it. The silence stretched. It was as sharp as a blade. People began to murmur in the crowd.
The werewolf priest repeated himself, but I didn’t say a word. Kai reached for my hand. I turned to him.
“Baby, are you okay?”
Beside him was that bodyguard who had shown me the video of Alena and Eugene earlier. I swallowed. I turned to him, and suddenly people began to scream. I jerked my head around and gasped.
“Max,” I whispered
Alena’s distant cousin. He was the Alpha of the root pack. They were rivals to our pack. Sworn enemies.
“Everyone stay where you are, or you die!” he barked.
He came and stood in front of me and Kai. “I challenge this marriage,” Max thundered. His voice cut through the wedding. “And my ancient law, if I win you, she’s mine.”
Murmurs broke out. Shock and gasps ripped through the crowd. Max glanced at me and smiled. That was how I knew I was safe. My heart leaped for joy. Someone had really come to save me.
But when I turned around, I froze. Kai had a smug smile on his face. I began to worry.

Chapter FiveVanessa’s POV Kai moved me to a penthouse, and then he locked me in. I banged on the door till my palm began to bleed. Nobody heard me. No one helped me.The flight back home took more than ten hours. Though I had travelled with Kai in a private jet, I was exhausted by the time we arrived. I hadn’t slept well since the night Kai took me from the house. The next time I opened my eyes, I didn’t need to be told. I was back home. At the pack. The landscape and the heightened senses. It was a house stinking of affluence. Maids and guards and all that royalty. I didn’t want to know how he got the money. All I wanted was to go home. Tears flooded my eyes, and I lay on the bed and began to cry. It hurt so much that my tears did nothing, but that was all I could do.Later that night, there was a knock on the door. I didn’t make a move to open it. They can break it if they want.“Open up, Miss Vanessa, you have to eat something or you will die!” a voice yelled from outside the d
Chapter FourVanessa’s POV I jerked awake. I looked around me. Where was I?“See anything familiar?” I swiftly turned around to find a figure standing in front of a window in the dark. I was on the verge of asking the question ‘who are you?’ when he turned. It was Kai.Kai Vega. And immediately, everything began to flood in.“Where have you brought me?”Kai walked away from the window and came towards me. I backed away further to the end of the bed on the bed.“What are you doing? Stay back! Don’t come any closer,” I yelled.Kai smirked, “I don’t bite Vanessa…yet.” There was a wicked gleam in his eyes. I looked around me, and there was a shoe.“If you come any closer, I’ll throw this on you,” I warned. He chuckled. “I’ll love to see you try, Nessa.”“Stop toying with me, Kai. And don’t call me Nessa.”His gaze grew darker. “I thought you liked it.”That was his pet name for me while we dated. I had asked him to call me that.I looked around the room for any means to escape. It was
Chapter ThreeVanessa’s POV1 week later I watched Eugene, Alena’s father, lie in his bed. His Blankets were pulled high, his frail body lost in the mass of covers. His eyes were closed, and he breathed like one with half a nose.I swallowed. Will he survive this? Oh, I pray he does. I have the money now. I have some money aside from the diamonds. That will be enough for his treatment. I mean, after what he had done for me, he deserves to live. He surely does. No one has ever made me feel wanted like Mr. Eugene after Dad’s passing. It was and still feels like I and Alena are sisters.Staring at him trembled like a leaf broke something in me. Illness had reduced the tall man to this. This thought hardens my hate when I recall how I had robbed my ex-boyfriend.“Nessa!” Alena screamed, and I roughly wiped my tears. And went to clean his room.“Nessa, please can you get the door!”I groaned and dropped the mop. She was closer to the door. Why do I have to be the one to go answer it? I
Chapter Two Vanessa’s POV “Shit” I hissed. Damn that glass. Now I have to announce my presence. I crawled to the back of the door and immediately flipped the light on. Heavy footsteps shook the ground, and I needed no telling who it was. I pulled the gun to the back of his head. “Don't Move,” he froze. Seconds passed before he said another word. “Excuse me,” he slowly turned to face me, and for the one millionth time, I was happy Alena suggested I wear a thick mask. He watched me from head to toe. Accessing me, but no matter how intimidating he looked, my hold on the gun never wavered. Kai Vega stood in front of me. Tall. Broad shoulders. As handsome as ever in a white shirt and black pants. His sleeves were rolled to his arms, just the way I loved them. Men! His very dark hair. His intimidating gray eyes. His slightly pouty lips. Kai had the kind of beauty that made women want to do his will, even without saying a word. Even I was not the exception. Memories flashed through my mi
Chapter OneKai's POV“What’s that supposed to mean?” I glared at the elders. The council Chambers was gravely quiet. None of them could look me in the eye, but I was baffled that they could plot behind my back. They even had the guts to utter such words in my presence.I paced the length of the room. Ever since I became Alpha, these elders have been on my neck. Problems after problems have been arising. The things I have had to endure to keep my throne.Suddenly, an old elder cleared his throat. He looked up, his chin tipped up in defiance."An alpha without a strong bloodline is an alpha on borrowed time," the old man said, his voice like gravel. "If you want to keep your title, bring us a mate. “The other elders murmured in agreement. This must be a jokeI haven't ruled for two years, and they are already requesting a mate.I inhaled slowly, suppressing the growl rising in my throat. I first went to take a seat in my chair, at the head of the long Mahogany table. As I stared at e
