For those of us who truly believe a happily ever after is just out there waiting for us, our worst nightmare is finding out we never had a chance. Cinna woke up one morning and realized her boyfriend wasn’t the man of her dreams that she always thought. She took a long look at herself and realized she wasn’t even her anymore, just some alternate version she created to please the selfish elf she shared a house with. That was the day she left. The day she chose herself for the first time in years. Now she has to learn how to start a new life, which isn’t as easy as you would think considering her lack of magic. What she doesn’t know is life has a cruel way of making sure you get everything you deserve whether you want it or not. Cinna may not be looking for love or anything other than the solitary life she craves, but she is needed more than she realizes. Let’s hope she can handle what life has decided to throw at her.

Fresh start

My first instinct when I open my eyes is to adjust my mood and behavior to ensure I don’t upset Wilheim. It takes another minute to remember I don’t have to do that anymore. A relieved sigh leaves my lips as I gaze up at the off-white ceiling above me with its yellow tinted water stains. My dingy apartment was difficult to get use to at first, coming from a beautiful 3-bedroom house with lots of space to this borderline studio apartment. It’s considered a 1-bedroom apartment, but I’m pretty sure they just threw up a quick wall to block off the bedroom so they could charge more for the space. I left my last relationship with almost no money and no job, so this was the best I could do with my limited resources. There’s a small kitchen that doesn’t seem to have been updated since the 80’s with its cracked vinyl countertop in the ugliest shade of yellow I think I’ve ever seen. The oven is barely useable to the point where it will burn a pizza within minutes or leave the pi

Unwelcome visitor

I wake with a start. It takes my brain a second to process what woke me up in the first place. Then I hear it, a loud knock on my apartment door. Weird. No one knows where I live and I made sure to get an apartment in the not-so-great part of town. That way no one would even think to look for me here. Everyone from before thinks I’m some spoiled brat. They would never be caught dead here let alone think I would reside in this crappy place. The only person I could think of would be the landlord. He’s the definition of intimidating and loud. Most Orc’s are. He just has the privilege of being the one to decide whether I have a place to live or not. He’s not a bad man in the sense of evil, but he is a landlord through and through. No sympathy for tough times or patience for whining about something being broken. Either way, I should get up before he gets upset at being ignored. Who knows what that would mean for my future here. I throw the blankets off me wi

Accepting friendship

I can’t remember the last time I was this excited for Monday to come. I nearly skip my morning coffee run in my hurry to get to work and see Jesse. Almost. I deserve my coffee treat. Just because my life has decided to go off the rails doesn’t mean I skip it. That would be blasphemy. Spending that last day off just stewing in all this new life changing information. Wilheim’s reaction to my magic makes me extremely cautious to mention it to anyone, but I know Jesse. At least better than I know anyone else. She has been a good friend. Or as good as she can be with me keeping her at arms length. Either way, I need help and who better to talk to than the amazingly sweet Faun I’ve been confiding in these past couple weeks. It isn’t until I walk into work and lay my eyes on her that my nerves truly get the best of me. She could freak out once I tell her. Tell someone that could make my life even worse. I don’t even know what this magic is to know the possible consequences.

Comfort from Buddy

I stare at the soda trying to get all my thoughts in order. Jesse seems to realize I need a minute because she doesn’t push for me to speak. She just sits there patiently waiting like the amazing person she is. After what feels like forever, yet not long enough, I take a deep breath before speaking. I decide to start on the most concerning part yet not the one that could end up with her reflecting the same horror that was on Wilheim’s face. “Wilheim showed up at my apartment this weekend. Demanding I return to him and that I am only throwing a tantrum. I didn’t even realize he knew where I was.” My voice cracks near the end. That trickle of fear sliding back into my chest. I haven’t thought much about him finding me since I’ve been so focused on the insanity that is my new magic. Mentioning it reminds me of how close I was to losing the little I’ve created for myself. “Oh, Cinna.” She gives me a sympathetic pat on the hand while Buddy squeezes his massi
