Chapter Four

Chapter four

Savannah was devastated that all these happened to her. She cherished her brother so much as he was the only blood she had. Lucy was at home, waiting for Savannah, when she saw her looking dejected.

“What is wrong? Did anything bad happen?” She asked, looking concerned.

“Things aren’t really going my way.” She said as she broke into hot tears.

“Oh, Savannah. I understand how you feel and I know I can't really offer much help, but I want you to stand strong, as things would get better for you, soon.” Lucy, encouraged, trying to lift her spirits up.

“When is that soon? A year to the end of my life? Or when I have lost so many things and important people in my life.” Savannah said, sounding weak.

“Oh come on, Savannah. Cheer up.” Lucy said as she wiped Savannah’s test

. ~

Two weeks later, Savannah and Lucy were talking about a funny experience they had. Savannah was able to laugh and cheer up a bit, because she was able to pay a substantial amount out of her brother’s surgical fee.

“Oh my goodness. He didn’t know what was in it for him.” Savannah laughed out loud. Then she began to feel like she could puke anytime soon, so she stood up and rushed to the toilet. She puked in the sink and washed her face. Savannah didn’t suspect anything until she puked about five times, consecutively as they were still having a funny conversation

. “What’s going on, Savannah?” Lucy asked, out of concern.

“I really do not know. I have been feeling weak recently, I feel the part time jobs I am into are beginning to tell on me.” Savannah said, looking worn out.

“I think we need to go to the hospital. I mean, right now. It must not be what I am suspecting.” Lucy said as she stood up and picked up her jacket.

“What are you suspecting?” Savannah asked, with an expression that showed she had no idea of what was going on.

“Never mind. We will find out when we get to the hospital.” Lucy replied, urging her to be quick.

They got to the hospital and she did a pregnancy and malaria test. When the results came out, the doctor called them into his office, smiling. It was a different doctor, In charge of what she came for.

“Sorry for the delay. Uhm, regarding the test, one was positive, while the other was negative.” The doctor said, smiling widely.

Lucy began to guess which one was positive, as she could observe the doctor’s wide grin. She wondered why they had to smile like that, not knowing if the patient was happy to hear the news or not.

“Doctor, which is positive?” Savannah asked, out of curiosity and fear, hoping it wasn’t the pregnancy result.

“I am happy to tell you that you are three weeks pregnant.” The doctor smiled, with his eyes sparkling.

“What!” Savannah exclaimed in shock.

. “Savannah, it is as you heard. Thank you doctor.” Lucy said as she grabbed Savannah’s hand and led her out of the doctor’s office.

Savannah had lost the zeal and strength to keep enduring all the bad things in life, as the pregnancy seemed like the worst thing ever. She wouldn’t be able to work or get a solution to her problems as pregnancy delayed a lot of things for people. And those who are poor could get their life destroyed by pregnancy.

She despised the man who made her life a roller coaster of problems, she regretted meeting him.

“Savannah, you do not have to worry about this too much.” Lucy advised, looking concerned about her.

“Lucy, thank you for all your efforts on me. You are a good friend and I will always remember you.” Savannah said, looking teary.

“Why are you talking this way? I hope you are not planning to do anything stupid?” Lucy asked, suspecting her moves.

Truly, Savannah was about to do something, stupid. There was a nearby river and she ran towards it, just to jump, but Lucy was fast enough to drag her back and they both fell on the ground.

“What the hell is wrong with you? A solution is the next thing to find, not death. Do not be a coward, and face what life throws at you. Come out victorious!” She shouted, sounding angry.

“I have been finding solutions all my life. All my life! And I have found none. Now that a new problem has come up, what gives you the assurance that I would find one, uhn!” Savannah retorted, feeling a whirlwind of anger and impatience.

“I have a suggestion and it is the solution to this particular problem. You shouldn’t try to leave the world, especially that your brother is still alive, depending on you.” Lucy said as she led Savannah slowly, back home.

 ~

“So what is the suggestion you want to make?” Savannah asked, looking impatient.

“I think you should contact the man who impregnated you. When you let him know about your pregnancy, he would be able to take care of this child. You could leave the child to him when you give birth, and while it is still in your tummy, he will give you all the things you need to hold on.” Lucy said, searching for an answer in Savannah’s eyes.

“What ridiculous idea is that? A man who I do not know about? Not even his contact! How the hell am I supposed to get in touch with him!” Savannah shouted in irritation.

“Oops! I am sorry, I didn’t think about that. But, do not worry, I will think of a better solution. I know you are wondering about the expenses and that of your brother’s surgical fee, and even taking care of yourself, as well as paying off the rent. But, a solution would be found soon. Just do not hurt yourself.” Lucy said, trying to stall time, for her not to feel there is no hope anymore.

A few days later, the TV was on and Savannah was blankly staring at it, along with Lucy who was excited to watch the news. Savannah was shocked when she saw a familiar face, which was the man who slept with her.

“This man, what is he doing on TV?”
