EMMA

I left my mother's room at that moment. She wanted to talk to me but I refused to hear her out. I was the first one to know Charles and I was sure that my mother knew that I liked him as well.

Charles was my step dad's doctor but before that, he was a senior at high school. I had a longtime crush on him and I was hoping I'd make a move on him soon. You can imagine how sad and frustrated I was when I smelled his body on my mother. What infuriated me the most was that I bought that perfume for Charles as a birthday gift. How dare he fuck my mother while having that on!

But I guess I couldn't blame him. My mother must have seduced him definitely. There was no way he would pick an older woman over a sexy twenty year old like me. My mother forced him to sleep with her. She was pathetic!

That night, I decided not to talk to her again. Not in this world or the next.

**

But tell me why I had to talk to her in the morning. It was something beyond my control so I had no choice. She was on her bed, seated instead of lying down. She didn't raise her head as I entered. She must have known I was the one just by my scent and footsteps.

“There is something you must know,” I started calmly. She raised her head now. “I believe our plan failed. The maid that was supposed to do our bidding isn't picking my calls.”

“Wait!” Sherlyn stood up as she looked into my eyes. “You mean you called her personally?”

“Yes, I did,” I replied, wondering what was wrong.

“And with your actual phone number?” Sherlyn asked again.

“Of course. What other number would I use?” I asked naively. Sherlyn almost went wild. She almost struck my face but she turned back at the last second and hit the wall instead. She was livid.

“Are you crazy?” Sherlyn shouted at me. “I should have known you were so naive and foolish! I should have never left such an important matter to you.”

“What did I do that was so wrong?” I retorted. I could feel tears gathering in my eyes. “You care less about my feelings and nagging me all the time. Can't you see I tried my best?”

“You foolish thing!” Sherlyn shouted. “What if the maid had been caught? Your phone number will be tracked by the police and you will be fucking arrested! Are you that dumb?”

Then I realized. Gosh, I might be in trouble.

“Mother…” I held Sherlyn’s hands instantly. “Help me. Save me! If the police come here, I will be sent to prison. I am still young. I don't want to end up in prison!”

“Shit!” Sherlyn sat down now. “There is nothing we can do now than to wait and hope the maid you hired didn't betray us. I know that chance is slim anyway.”

Sherlyn's phone rang and she picked it up. It was from the front gate. Her phone was on speaker so I could hear what she was saying.

“Miss May is here, ma'am! I know you told us to stop her from entering but she barged in regardless. What shall I do?” That was the voice of the security officer at the gate.

“Stay there. I will take care of it on my own!” Sherlyn replied calmly. She hung up the call and looked at me. I could tell she had a thousand and one unanswered questions just like I did.

“What if…” I muttered. My mind was running wild.

“First, we meet May. The rest will come later. Stay calm, Emma. You can do that for mummy, right?” Sherlyn held my hands. I nodded and she patted me on the back. She led the way and I followed. We were in the living room in no time and May was already there. She was seated on her favorite sofa but she stood up when she watched us enter.

“I wasn't expecting you so early in the morning…” Sherlyn acted as if nothing was wrong. I tried to act calmly as well but I was afraid my nervousness still showed.

“We don't need to beat around the bush! Both of us are aware that I am here regarding your stupid attempt at murdering my unborn child!” May said firmly. She stared at me in particular and I almost went crazy out of fear.

“That's a bold accusation! We never did that, May. It is all a misunderstanding…” Sherlyn denied. May's face turned ice cold and the aura in the room seemed to change as well.

“If you continue to play dumb, I might as well head to the police station instead of attempting to reason with you like humans…” May muttered. “Oh, perhaps you are now a monster. I don't see how a human would want to kill an unborn child out of jealousy.”

“What is your point?” Sherlyn had stopped beating around the bush.

“Don't try it again!” May told my mother firmly. “I am only letting it go this time so as not to stain our family's name. Even though I hate to admit it, you are still my father's wife and a member of this family.”

Sherlyn laughed.

“Why care about a family you have been disowned from?” Sherlyn asked. I could see anger clearly written on her face.

“Ah!” May laughed. “Since you disowned me, you will have to accept me into the family from today onwards. That is a necessity.”

“And if I refuse?” Sherlyn asked with a threatening gaze.

“Your daughter…” May pointed at me. “There are voice recordings of her call with my maid. I just have to release that to the police. My husband will happily use all of his connections to make sure she doesn't make it out of jail.”

“May! How dare you!” Sherlyn stood up. She was breathing hard.

MAY I clenched my fists. I thought I could fake a smile but my face didn’t cooperate with my slyness. She was dressed in a different attire, one that I had never seen since I got to the mansion. The maid stepped backwards as she came forward.“My name is Lydia and I am the current housekeeper. For the next two weeks, I will take up the duties of the butler and manage the maids until Mama comes back. Nice to meet you, Miss,” She smiled at me. Just by taking one look at her, I could tell that she was an opportunist. She was smiling so confidently, not minding that she was caught with my husband last night. What an effrontery. “Whose decision is this?” I asked calmly. I was so close to having an outburst. I had to control myself but it was getting harder every moment.“It wasn’t Nicholas, don’t worry,” Lydia replied.“And how dare you call my husband by his name! Are maids supposed to do such discourtesy?” I asked angrily. I was genuinely upset.“You can leave,” Lydia told the maid be

MAYHe walked me to the door and when I closed it after myself, I peeped using the keyhole to see what he would do. He waited for a moment, sighed, and left. Disappointed, I felt like going after him immediately. However, I didn’t do this. He should come after me instead, I thought. Having so many visitors in a day made me stressed so I decided to make up for it by getting some sleep. However, worry couldn’t let me sleep. I kept on thinking about him. He remained evergreen in my mind. What if he couldn’t sleep tonight due to his nightmares? Shouldn’t I wait for him and cuddle him to sleep? What if he wanted to come but he was shy? I had to help him. After all, he would be the father of my child. I couldn’t allow him to die due to fatigue and insomnia. Decision made, I stopped rolling back and forth on the bed. I stood up to find Nicholas. I figured he would be in his private library so I went there. He wasn’t there so I had to look around. I met a maid on my way. She seemed to be fi

Nicholas's POV It had been a while since I felt so thrilled. I had been living a laid-back life for a while with little to protect. However, I could afford to be witty while protecting May and our unborn child. I stared at her as we both entered. She had a little baby bump already. "Are you seeing the doctor regularly?" I asked carefully. She stared back at me mischievously. I looked away, nervous for no reason.."The doctor comes here every now and then. I get a checkup regularly. Your baby is fine, don't worry," May told me reasonably. She walked faster and I followed. Right then, it occurred to me that she might feel a little unimportant. I ran to meet up with her pace. "I care about you as well," I told her carefully. "Of course, you do. If anything bad happens to me, your unborn child will suffer too. Isn't he your last chance at having a trueborn child?" May asked me. She looked resolute in her thoughts. I wished I could tell her that I cared about her not only because she c

SHERLYN Roberts was pretty fast. He sent me the address and well, I was on my way. I anticipated seeing Charles but I was anxious too. Everyone claimed he had never missed a workday throughout his years in the hospital. He did that today and that could only mean something was wrong. His apartment was on the third floor but I had no difficulty finding it. I rang the doorbell, expecting him to open. The door opened. Charles came outside, looking at me in surprise. "How did you find my house?" He asked. He didn't look good at all. He had bruises on his face like he had been beaten up. I went closer instantly and touched his face. "Who did this to you? Did you get into a fight?" I asked worriedly. He took my hands off his face slowly. "I'm fine," He told me. "But you shouldn't be here... It's too late." "Do I bother you?" I asked, staring at him. "You should have called. I'm taken in by surprise, that's all," Charles replied. Obviously, he didn't want to hurt my feelings. "You sho

SHERLYN Emma had the habit of embarrassing me in public spaces. She wasn't the smartest person in the room nor the most emotionally intelligent but even at that, I expected composure from her. She was blushing like forest fire as she stared at Nicholas. I pinched her secretly and she sat down and regained her composure. Oh My God. "You must have been flustered," Nicholas told her. "I am fine now," Emma replied. "I have many things to think of. I was carried away by my thoughts." "Hope you aren't struggling? Why do you think so much? It will only cause you to look older than you are..." Nicholas replied. "Thank you, you care so much about my daughter," I chirped in. "She is a beautiful lady. Thinking would give her wrinkles and ruin her pretty face," Nicholas said calmly. May focused on her meal, brandishing the knife as if she meant to use it on a human rather than the meal in front of her. Emma blushed. I had to pinch her to stop it. We shouldn't be comfortable in an enemy zo

MAY I opened my eyes slightly and I could see Abby right before me. She handed me a document with a smile on her face. I collected it and she stepped back. "I love men. Why would I be a lesbian?" She asked. She winked at me and left. She had deceived me all along. I would smack her if I could but unfortunately, I would never be able to. The document was a list Abby had compiled for me. I took it to the library and placed it on the table, I would read it later. ** I was making juice by myself for the first time. Mama had gone out to shop so I was free. No one nagged me for stressing myself when there was a professional for such things. Making my own drink made me feel accomplished. Perhaps, I was never born to be wealthy and lazy. It didn't suit me at all. My phone vibrated, indicating it was a test. I checked it right away. "I heard of your little campaign yesterday. I will make tea. We need to talk." It was Sherlyn and she had requested my presence at our house. I thought for a
