MAY
“Harry?” Mama looked shocked. “How do you know that person?” “I saw him earlier,” I muttered. “He came to talk to me and Nicholas arrived in the midst of it. Nicholas looked so angry so I guessed they have bad blood. I don't know exactly what happened between them but I thought you would know.” Mama sighed. “I was just going to ask you if you'd like some tea. Follow me, Miss. Let's talk over tea,” Mama told me. Smiling, I followed her. I was going to get the answers I wanted very soon. ** “Both of them were best friends. They knew each other inside out and from the way they bonded, I never thought there would come a day they would be enemies. It is still unbelievable!” Mama told me. She looked like she was in pain herself. “Why did they become enemies?” I asked calmly. “Sandra…” Mama blurted out. “It all started because of that girl. She was just an intern in Nicholas's workplace and somehow, the cold Nicholas fell in love with her. It was magical. Prior to that, I'd never seen him in love. I didn't like the girl per se but I endured her because of Nicholas. However, it seemed as if Harry wanted her as well. I am not too sure but it seemed they once argued about it. That day was the memorial for my uncle so I remember it well enough.” I took a deep breath. “So, such close friends fought over a girl and that ended their friendship?” I asked. That sounded too simple. If that was it, both of them were nothing more than two foolish and immature men. “No. That was just the beginning!” Mama continued. “It turns out I was right about that girl, Sandra. Nicholas caught her in bed with Harry.” “What!” I exclaimed. “You mean she was cheating on Nicholas with Harry, his best friend?” “Exactly,” Mama nodded several times. “She must have been playing with Nicholas's heart all through. However, the climax of the story is that after the incident, she had a big argument with Nicholas and few days after, she ends up dead. She was murdered.” My heart skipped a beat. “How?” I asked. “I hope Nicholas didn't do it?” I was scared all of a sudden. Nicholas told me how he punished those who went against him but could he really kill his ex lover? “He didn't do it,” Mama replied. “I know Nicholas is rough and ruthless but he has limitations. Nicholas was framed to take responsibility for that incident. Harry was the same person that served as witness for the argument between Nicholas and the late Sandra. I was worried when that happened and I feared for Nicholas's safety. Fortunately, he wasn't found guilty.” I nodded. “He must have got out with his connections,” I whimpered. “Well, I guess,” Mama muttered. “He would have been framed successfully if he was an average person. Money and power indeed makes a man. Those are the currencies of the world.” “Thank you for telling me,” I smiled at her. “Oh no! You are going to marry him. You should know this much about him,” Mama replied excitedly. Then her voice turned cold. “Erm… I was also going to tell you. I think Nicholas still have nightmares of the late Sandra till this day.” My face lit up. “He dreams of her?” I muttered. “I believe so. I don't think he sleeps comfortable at night. He is always up before everyone else and it has always made me worried,” Mama confided in me. She held my hands and looked into my eyes. “I want you to help him find peace. I believe you can do it, May.” I sighed. “I will try my best…” I paused. “For you!” ** I wanted to ask Mama about Austin, Nicholas's half brother but I decided to do that another day. That night, I waited patiently for Nicholas to come home but he didn't. I was so worried that I couldn't sleep. When I asked myself why I was worrying about him so much, I concluded it was because of Mama. I was doing it for her sake. It was 12:51 pm and I couldn't hold it any longer. I came out of the room and my first instinct was to find Mama. However, I didn't want to disturb the old woman's rest. I sat in the sitting room myself. Who could I call? Vivian? And that was what I did. From her voice, she seemed to have been sleeping. “Where is Nicholas? He isn't home yet,” I asked her. She didn’t talk and all I heard were sounds of movement. She must have been sitting up. “It's late at night, Miss. How about you call your soon-to-be husband by yourself? Why do you nag this poor secretary who left work over six hours ago?” Vivian asked. She sounded infuriated. Normally, I would scold her but I felt for her this time. “Sorry for ruining your sleep!” I said and cut the call immediately. She was right. I should call Nicholas by myself. If I told him I wasn't feeling well, he would probably run over immediately. But guess what? I didn't even have his contact number. End of road. I didn't know how but I ended up sleeping on the sofa. In actual terms, I fell asleep while sitting down. When I woke up, the first person I saw was Nicholas. He was seated on the sofa opposite me. I could see pillars around me like supporting beams. I didn't need to ask before I concluded it was Nicholas's doing. “You're up finally,” Nicholas muttered. “Where were you last night?” I asked immediately. “C'mon! We don't have that kind of relationship…” Nicholas stood up. “You should get some rest in the bedroom. See ya!” “It's my fault!” I stood up and faced him. “I'm sorry for carelessly worrying about you. I should have never done that!” We looked into each other's eyes, gazing intently.May's POV There was something about Susan that I couldn't figure out. She didn't give me those deep, playful expressions of hers and it bothered me. However, I concluded that meeting with my stepmother would have caused it. She must have been so nervous. Mama came into the room, wearing a smile as usual. "The meal is ready, Miss. Shall I escort you?" Mama offered. "Don't worry, Mama," I replied. "I will take my friend by myself. You should go and rest for now." Mama turned towards Susan,"You are the best friend of the lady of the mansion. Please make sure to feel at home and enjoy your stay here." "It will be a short one, ma'am," Susan replied. "I will leave after lunch." "Why?" I touched Susan's shoulder lightly. "If you are here, just stay with me till evening. I will get the driver to take you home." "I'm sorry," Susan managed to smile. "I have some papers I need to finish working on. They are research papers and they need to be submitted soon." I nodded in accepta
Susan's POV I stared at Sherlyn. She had a smile on her face and it felt as if I was giving her exactly what she wanted. I had to stop being uneasy. If I continued like this, it would be the same as giving her hints about what I really wanted. "May is a good friend..." I began to say. "She won't treat me as a slave of hers. In fact, she treats no one like they are slaves. You shouldn't use that line." "I know you have big dreams," Sherlyn told me calmly. "You studied medicine and surgery for many years in the university. You started at our hospital as a resident for four years and now, you are a fellow. Next year, you are supposed to clinch the professor's position and be an official staff member. Life would get really rosy when that happens." "What about that?" I asked feigning ignorance. "I am sure you won't give up your dreams just to become a doctor nobody knows at your friend's house," Sherlyn continued. "May is known for being Nicholas's wife but do you think she will be sa
Sherlyn The hospital's chief executive officer was right in front of me. His name was Roberts and he has been in the position since the time of my husband. I was seated while he stood. He was a tall man with a beastly aura. "I deserve an explanation for what happened yesterday, don't I?" I asked him calmly. "I am sorry, ma'am," He replied. "Stop it!" I shouted angrily. "I need an explanation rather than an insincere apology. How on earth could the VIP room be accessed forcefully. Is that the kind of system we are building? Where is the hospital's pride as the best hospital in the country?" He said nothing. He must have thought this was his best option. However, it made me angrier. "Do you know why I didn't fire you even though you were fiercely loyal to my husband?" I asked him carefully. "I'm not sure..." He muttered. "However, I think it might be because I am good at my job." "Exactly," I replied with a smirk on my face. "I fired almost every executive that was loyal to Marc
MAY What was that incident? Was it related to Nicholas's nightmare? I turned towards Mama, searching for answers. However, she looked away. I touched her shoulder lightly and looked into her eyes. "I need to know the problem if I am going to help Nicholas," I told her carefully. "He slept well last night in my arms. However, that would work only when I'm there. If you want him to sleep peacefully, tell me the reason. I will help him." "I have no doubt you can help him," Mama muttered. "It's an old matter and only a few people know it. It happened when he was ten years old and he has been traumatized by it since then. He had to see a psychiatrist for a while but he continued to have nightmares every night. I get worried about him every now and then due to that reason." "What happened?" I asked curiously. "It was an accident!" Mama replied. "He went driving with his parents and they got into an accident. Only Nicholas survived and he blames himself for what happened. He thinks
MAY I knew exactly when he entered the room. I could tell he was being delicate so he wouldn't rouse me so I simply played along. I acted as if I was asleep. He went to shower and after, he literally crawled into bed with me. When it seemed as if he was asleep, I turned to look at him. He was particularly handsome when he was asleep. I turned to sleep only to hear him jump out of bed in a few minutes. I turned out of concern and by the time I did, he was sitting at a corner in the bed. It had only been fifteen minutes when he slept off. How could nightmares come already? "Do you have nightmares every night?" I asked as I touched his shoulder. He turned back to look at me and took a deep breath. "Go to bed," He told me. He stood up and walked to the door. I sat up quickly. "Where are you going?" I asked him. "I want to grab a bottle of water. Go to bed, May," He told me. "I have water here," I pointed at the table. "Drink that and join me in bed." Nicholas sighed. "Just go to b
NICHOLAS It was eerie and that was the exact impression I wanted to leave in Charles's heart. I could see him shaking out of fear. He was right to do that. "Please don't kill me..." He muttered with his voice quivering. "I won't tell anyone about this. I won't report to the police that you kidnapped me. I beg you. I will do whatever you want me to." "Is that so?" I laughed. "You have seen many movies, it seems. I haven't seen as many as you would have so I will ask you this. What happens to the victim when he sees his kidnapper's face?" "I promise I will tell nobody. Just spare my life!" He begged. I smiled and stood up from my chair. I walked behind him and slowly touched his shoulders. He was tied so he couldn't move but I could tell that he was out of breath. "I am not a kidnapper for ransom as you already know," I began. "You have the guts to whisper terrifying things into the ears of my wife and that's why you are here.""Te... Terrifying things?" He stammered. "You see, Ch
