NICHOLAS
“It's my fault!” May stood up and turned towards me. “I'm sorry for carelessly worrying about you. I should have never done that!” Now I felt like the bad person. Perhaps, I was the villain in reality. Here was May who spent the whole night on the sofa waiting for me. She must have worried about me based on my interactions with Harry yesterday. I guess I deserved a spanking for making her feel bad. “I'm sorry,” I replied and left. I must have realized that at the end of the day, it was still a contract marriage. We would be getting married tomorrow so it was too early to start developing feelings for each other. If I let her worry about me continually, it would only be a matter of time before feelings clashed. I had to avoid it. I had to help her too. ** Mama made sure I stayed home all day today so we could finalize the wedding arrangements. I chose a Catholic church for the wedding to honor the wishes of my late mother. Trust me, I wasn't religious. Mama also prepared a small dinner party in the evening. Only few people were invited even though I would have liked it better if no one was invited. I couldn't look into May's eyes all day. She seemed to have forgotten about the issue anyway. “Do you promise to love and honor her till this day until the end of your days?” The priest asked me. I nodded and looked into May's eyes sincerely. “I do,” I muttered. “May Greenfield, do you promise to cherish and honor him till this day until the end of your days?” The priest turned to May. “I do,” She replied. What came next was the exchanging of rings. Afterwards, the priest have the final blessing. I could care less about that since I had a goal in mind. The final, eventual thing. You know… “You may kiss the bride!” The priest said eventually. That was what I had been waiting for since. I must have licked my lips in that brief moment. We looked at ourselves and my lips met hers. I wasn't expecting a French kiss anyway and it didn't come. Our lips touched and that was it. But I was satisfied. It was enough for now. ** “Cheers!” I held out my glass. It was filled with wine while hers was filled with sparkling juice. Citing health concerns, Mama had convinced her not to take wine for the sake of the unborn child. “Do we have to?” May asked. She drank from her glass without clinking glasses with me. She was cold. I drank as well. I didn't know why I was hoping for good relations with her anyway. I should have been the one to draw the line. “You should go to bed early. You were stressed today…” I muttered. “I'm not saying it for YOU, it's because of my child. You should take care of the baby.” “Right!” May smiled. “But we have to talk, don't we? The wedding is over so you have to help me. There was a reason why I expected a contract marriage with you.” “The baby?” I asked. “No, you promised to help me get back everything that belonged to me naturally,” May reminded me. “To do that, you must help me kick out Sherlyn and Emma. Both of them do not deserve to bear my family's name. It's a disgrace!” “Is that so?” I took a sip of the wine. May's eyes were piercing. “You know it as well,” May replied. “I married you to protect the Greenfield family name. You promised.” She was getting worked up and I knew it. I had to reassure her else her health could decline. “What do you want me to do exactly?” I asked her. “I promised and I will deliver. I'm a man of my word.” “Get me access to my father!” May replied readily. “He is at a VIP room in Greenfield hospital and as you already know, my stepmother has control of the hospital. She forbade me from visiting my father and she has security officers there to enforce that.” “Then I will round up a few of my men!” I offered. “It won't be hard to gain entry if we use force.” May kept her eyes on me. “Are you being sarcastic right now?” She asked. Then it dawned on me that force couldn't be used. Even if May gained entry for now, it would backfire in the end. Sherlyn would probably move May's father to a place she wouldn't be able to find him. Also, if I had my men move May's father to a different hospital, it could be termed as kidnapping. Sherlyn was the head of the family for now and thus, May had no right to take her sick father. “I guess we need to do it peacefully…” I said calmly. “Right! We can't use force,” May responded. Her face lit up when it seemed I was finally understanding her. “I will get it done, trust me,” I replied and picked up my glass again. “I was thinking…” May interrupted. “How about I remain in charge? I think I can do a good job. Also, it's my revenge.” “You are not physically fit to undergo that stress,” I pointed out. “I will take care of it.” “I have Ken!” May insisted. “He couldn't protect you from Harry. He is just a driver and nothing more,” I told her. “You need real protection.” ‘Then get me a bodyguard!” May said firmly. I could tell her mind was made up already. “I will take ten bodyguard, no, twenty. I don't mind how many bodyguards you deem fit for my security. All I ask is one thing. It is that I take my revenge by myself.” “Then what do I do?” I asked her, not breaking eye contact. “Just support me from behind,” May told me. “Cheers!” I raised my glass. This time, her face lit up and she raised her glass. And the revenge begins.May's POV There was something about Susan that I couldn't figure out. She didn't give me those deep, playful expressions of hers and it bothered me. However, I concluded that meeting with my stepmother would have caused it. She must have been so nervous. Mama came into the room, wearing a smile as usual. "The meal is ready, Miss. Shall I escort you?" Mama offered. "Don't worry, Mama," I replied. "I will take my friend by myself. You should go and rest for now." Mama turned towards Susan,"You are the best friend of the lady of the mansion. Please make sure to feel at home and enjoy your stay here." "It will be a short one, ma'am," Susan replied. "I will leave after lunch." "Why?" I touched Susan's shoulder lightly. "If you are here, just stay with me till evening. I will get the driver to take you home." "I'm sorry," Susan managed to smile. "I have some papers I need to finish working on. They are research papers and they need to be submitted soon." I nodded in accepta
Susan's POV I stared at Sherlyn. She had a smile on her face and it felt as if I was giving her exactly what she wanted. I had to stop being uneasy. If I continued like this, it would be the same as giving her hints about what I really wanted. "May is a good friend..." I began to say. "She won't treat me as a slave of hers. In fact, she treats no one like they are slaves. You shouldn't use that line." "I know you have big dreams," Sherlyn told me calmly. "You studied medicine and surgery for many years in the university. You started at our hospital as a resident for four years and now, you are a fellow. Next year, you are supposed to clinch the professor's position and be an official staff member. Life would get really rosy when that happens." "What about that?" I asked feigning ignorance. "I am sure you won't give up your dreams just to become a doctor nobody knows at your friend's house," Sherlyn continued. "May is known for being Nicholas's wife but do you think she will be sa
Sherlyn The hospital's chief executive officer was right in front of me. His name was Roberts and he has been in the position since the time of my husband. I was seated while he stood. He was a tall man with a beastly aura. "I deserve an explanation for what happened yesterday, don't I?" I asked him calmly. "I am sorry, ma'am," He replied. "Stop it!" I shouted angrily. "I need an explanation rather than an insincere apology. How on earth could the VIP room be accessed forcefully. Is that the kind of system we are building? Where is the hospital's pride as the best hospital in the country?" He said nothing. He must have thought this was his best option. However, it made me angrier. "Do you know why I didn't fire you even though you were fiercely loyal to my husband?" I asked him carefully. "I'm not sure..." He muttered. "However, I think it might be because I am good at my job." "Exactly," I replied with a smirk on my face. "I fired almost every executive that was loyal to Marc
MAY What was that incident? Was it related to Nicholas's nightmare? I turned towards Mama, searching for answers. However, she looked away. I touched her shoulder lightly and looked into her eyes. "I need to know the problem if I am going to help Nicholas," I told her carefully. "He slept well last night in my arms. However, that would work only when I'm there. If you want him to sleep peacefully, tell me the reason. I will help him." "I have no doubt you can help him," Mama muttered. "It's an old matter and only a few people know it. It happened when he was ten years old and he has been traumatized by it since then. He had to see a psychiatrist for a while but he continued to have nightmares every night. I get worried about him every now and then due to that reason." "What happened?" I asked curiously. "It was an accident!" Mama replied. "He went driving with his parents and they got into an accident. Only Nicholas survived and he blames himself for what happened. He thinks
MAY I knew exactly when he entered the room. I could tell he was being delicate so he wouldn't rouse me so I simply played along. I acted as if I was asleep. He went to shower and after, he literally crawled into bed with me. When it seemed as if he was asleep, I turned to look at him. He was particularly handsome when he was asleep. I turned to sleep only to hear him jump out of bed in a few minutes. I turned out of concern and by the time I did, he was sitting at a corner in the bed. It had only been fifteen minutes when he slept off. How could nightmares come already? "Do you have nightmares every night?" I asked as I touched his shoulder. He turned back to look at me and took a deep breath. "Go to bed," He told me. He stood up and walked to the door. I sat up quickly. "Where are you going?" I asked him. "I want to grab a bottle of water. Go to bed, May," He told me. "I have water here," I pointed at the table. "Drink that and join me in bed." Nicholas sighed. "Just go to b
NICHOLAS It was eerie and that was the exact impression I wanted to leave in Charles's heart. I could see him shaking out of fear. He was right to do that. "Please don't kill me..." He muttered with his voice quivering. "I won't tell anyone about this. I won't report to the police that you kidnapped me. I beg you. I will do whatever you want me to." "Is that so?" I laughed. "You have seen many movies, it seems. I haven't seen as many as you would have so I will ask you this. What happens to the victim when he sees his kidnapper's face?" "I promise I will tell nobody. Just spare my life!" He begged. I smiled and stood up from my chair. I walked behind him and slowly touched his shoulders. He was tied so he couldn't move but I could tell that he was out of breath. "I am not a kidnapper for ransom as you already know," I began. "You have the guts to whisper terrifying things into the ears of my wife and that's why you are here.""Te... Terrifying things?" He stammered. "You see, Ch
