Susan's POV
I stared at Sherlyn. She had a smile on her face and it felt as if I was giving her exactly what she wanted. I had to stop being uneasy. If I continued like this, it would be the same as giving her hints about what I really wanted. "May is a good friend..." I began to say. "She won't treat me as a slave of hers. In fact, she treats no one like they are slaves. You shouldn't use that line." "I know you have big dreams," Sherlyn told me calmly. "You studied medicine and surgery for many years in the university. You started at our hospital as a resident for four years and now, you are a fellow. Next year, you are supposed to clinch the professor's position and be an official staff member. Life would get really rosy when that happens." "What about that?" I asked feigning ignorance. "I am sure you won't give up your dreams just to become a doctor nobody knows at your friend's house," Sherlyn continued. "May is known for being Nicholas's wife but do you think she will be satisfied with that? The answer is no. She is a very greedy one and she wishes to have everything. She is one of those people who eat their cake and want to have it. I wouldn't sacrifice my career for someone like that if I were in your shoes." I took a deep breath. Maybe Sherlyn was right. "If I want to stay at the hospital, would you let me?" I asked calmly. Sherlyn gave me a big smile and faced me fully. "We would have to make a deal. I might not be the most loyal person you've ever met but I never break promises," Sherlyn told me firmly. "You promised to love your husband forever," Emma interrupted. "You said it so many times that my ears hurt. Are you really keeping the promise?" Sherlyn turned towards her daughter and gave her a cold stare. Emma stood up now. "I know what's going to happen in the end anyway," Emma turned towards me. "Just keep your career, Susan. Like my mother said, I am also one of those people who like to eat their cake and still have it. I can tell you how we think. If you stick with May, you will end up being her slave till the end. You think you're still a friend to her? That's a great lie. Just show a little sign of betrayal and she will be the one to bury your career." Sherlyn smiled now and turned towards me. "You've heard what Emma said. May is more brutal than you think. Your friendship only exists because you have something to give her. When you become useless, she will completely forget about you..." Sherlyn said convincingly. I took a deep breath and thought about what they just told me. They might be right. Even though I considered May as my best friend, she didn't reach out to me at all before her wedding with Nicholas. I didn't even get an invitation to the wedding. The next time she showed up, she came so I could help her. I helped her and now, my career was near its end. "What is your exact offer?" I asked her. I was getting swayed already. "You will do nothing much," Sherlyn said carefully. "You will get closer to May and serve as my spy. You will continue to work at the hospital and as long as you never get caught, May will still regard you as her best friend." "But what if I get caught?" I asked curiously. "That would be dangerous!" Emma chirped in. "The best thing is to never get caught. You have to be meticulous and smart." "And even if you do get caught..." Sherlyn interrupted. "... I will help you out. You will also have a job at Greenfield hospital and if you'd like, I will give you a payout for your trouble. What do you think?" "Give me time. Let me think about it..." I muttered. Sherlyn nodded and gave me a big smile again. Thinking about the decision I had to make gave me a headache. But I knew what to do. I needed to meet May. The moment I stepped out of Sherlyn's house, May was the first person I called over the phone. "Remember how you promised to invite me to your place?" I asked over the phone. "Of course, I remember," May replied. "Can it be right now?" I muttered. "I'll text you the address!" May told me. I cut the call and got a cab. I would meet May and make my final decision. ** The mansion was a gigantic structure. I had never seen something like it before. The scenery got me in the mood for picture taking but I controlled myself believing there would be enough time to do that after the discussion with May. She was waiting for me and she looked so pleased to see me. "I called suddenly. I hope it's no inconvenience?" I asked thoughtfully. However, May laughed it off and led me inside. "I wanted the chef to make a meal for you but I don't know what your favorite food is. We always ate out and I always ordered, you know," May told me. I smiled but in my heart, I felt bad. How would my best friend fail to know what food I enjoyed the most? She led me to the bar and poured me wine. It was in the afternoon and I feared getting drunk. However, I drank it anyway. "I'm sure you came here to tell me something," May turned to me, looking into my eyes. "I did," I smiled. "I heard Sherlyn summoned you to our house. What did she say? Did she threaten to fire you or she actually did?" May asked curiously. I stared back at her and thought of what to do. If I told her the whole truth, I would be joining hands with her and potentially losing my job. It was either Sherlyn or May. "Susan!" May called me. "Are you okay?" "I'm fine," I replied pleasantly. "Sherlyn said I was such a diligent doctor that she couldn't fire me. I was given one more chance."May's POV There was something about Susan that I couldn't figure out. She didn't give me those deep, playful expressions of hers and it bothered me. However, I concluded that meeting with my stepmother would have caused it. She must have been so nervous. Mama came into the room, wearing a smile as usual. "The meal is ready, Miss. Shall I escort you?" Mama offered. "Don't worry, Mama," I replied. "I will take my friend by myself. You should go and rest for now." Mama turned towards Susan,"You are the best friend of the lady of the mansion. Please make sure to feel at home and enjoy your stay here." "It will be a short one, ma'am," Susan replied. "I will leave after lunch." "Why?" I touched Susan's shoulder lightly. "If you are here, just stay with me till evening. I will get the driver to take you home." "I'm sorry," Susan managed to smile. "I have some papers I need to finish working on. They are research papers and they need to be submitted soon." I nodded in accepta

Sherlyn The hospital's chief executive officer was right in front of me. His name was Roberts and he has been in the position since the time of my husband. I was seated while he stood. He was a tall man with a beastly aura. "I deserve an explanation for what happened yesterday, don't I?" I asked him calmly. "I am sorry, ma'am," He replied. "Stop it!" I shouted angrily. "I need an explanation rather than an insincere apology. How on earth could the VIP room be accessed forcefully. Is that the kind of system we are building? Where is the hospital's pride as the best hospital in the country?" He said nothing. He must have thought this was his best option. However, it made me angrier. "Do you know why I didn't fire you even though you were fiercely loyal to my husband?" I asked him carefully. "I'm not sure..." He muttered. "However, I think it might be because I am good at my job." "Exactly," I replied with a smirk on my face. "I fired almost every executive that was loyal to Marc
MAY What was that incident? Was it related to Nicholas's nightmare? I turned towards Mama, searching for answers. However, she looked away. I touched her shoulder lightly and looked into her eyes. "I need to know the problem if I am going to help Nicholas," I told her carefully. "He slept well last night in my arms. However, that would work only when I'm there. If you want him to sleep peacefully, tell me the reason. I will help him." "I have no doubt you can help him," Mama muttered. "It's an old matter and only a few people know it. It happened when he was ten years old and he has been traumatized by it since then. He had to see a psychiatrist for a while but he continued to have nightmares every night. I get worried about him every now and then due to that reason." "What happened?" I asked curiously. "It was an accident!" Mama replied. "He went driving with his parents and they got into an accident. Only Nicholas survived and he blames himself for what happened. He thinks
MAY I knew exactly when he entered the room. I could tell he was being delicate so he wouldn't rouse me so I simply played along. I acted as if I was asleep. He went to shower and after, he literally crawled into bed with me. When it seemed as if he was asleep, I turned to look at him. He was particularly handsome when he was asleep. I turned to sleep only to hear him jump out of bed in a few minutes. I turned out of concern and by the time I did, he was sitting at a corner in the bed. It had only been fifteen minutes when he slept off. How could nightmares come already? "Do you have nightmares every night?" I asked as I touched his shoulder. He turned back to look at me and took a deep breath. "Go to bed," He told me. He stood up and walked to the door. I sat up quickly. "Where are you going?" I asked him. "I want to grab a bottle of water. Go to bed, May," He told me. "I have water here," I pointed at the table. "Drink that and join me in bed." Nicholas sighed. "Just go to b
NICHOLAS It was eerie and that was the exact impression I wanted to leave in Charles's heart. I could see him shaking out of fear. He was right to do that. "Please don't kill me..." He muttered with his voice quivering. "I won't tell anyone about this. I won't report to the police that you kidnapped me. I beg you. I will do whatever you want me to." "Is that so?" I laughed. "You have seen many movies, it seems. I haven't seen as many as you would have so I will ask you this. What happens to the victim when he sees his kidnapper's face?" "I promise I will tell nobody. Just spare my life!" He begged. I smiled and stood up from my chair. I walked behind him and slowly touched his shoulders. He was tied so he couldn't move but I could tell that he was out of breath. "I am not a kidnapper for ransom as you already know," I began. "You have the guts to whisper terrifying things into the ears of my wife and that's why you are here.""Te... Terrifying things?" He stammered. "You see, Ch
